In the art studio we are thinking about "Big Ideas."
These ideas lay the foundation for studying, creating and enjoying art in all grade levels.  This foundation is important and acts as a building block in encouraging students to utilize their creativity outside of the art studio.  Art studies are also connected to classroom curricula in every grade level during various times of the year.  There are many opportunities that allow us to integrate other subject areas  into art studio work.  This integration is important because it provides students with learning experiences in both the art studio and in their classroom that connect in a meaningful way.

In addition to all of our "big ideas and understandings" younger children in grades K-3 will be thinking about where artists get their ideas as well as the decisions that artists make.  Older children will be working on knowing themselves as artists by identifying their strengths and skills in art.  In addition to working off of the art studio's "big ideas," 4th and 5th graders may tell you that they are a strong Realistic Renderer, Artistic Experimenter, Craftsperson or Art Enthusiast.  This is a shift in thinking that a "good" artist was a great renderer or copier.  We take a studio thinking approach in the art studio.  An environment is created where every child/adult is an artist.

Since art making is a complicated process, students may not always take home their work right away.  Usually, work is held in the art studio so that it could be displayed around the building, in the community or in an art exhibit.  Sometimes, paint may not be dry, or the process of creating the artwork is not yet complete.  In the art studio, the emphasis lies on our big ideas, technique, concept and skill.   The art curriculum is process based and revolves around both the elements and principles of design.   Students in the younger grades will also be exploring new materials around the art studio.  They may take a class to plan or sketch out their work or practice using new tools.  All students will also be engaged in participating in Socratic Seminars which provoke higher level thinking skills leading to bigger ideas and understandings.

Parent prompts can be found on the link relating to current studies.  This page gives parents the opportunity to share ideas and concepts that their child is learning about in the art studio.  It includes direct curriculum related questions by grade level which generate a curriculum specific conversation with your child.
