About The Teacher

"Let us read, and let us dance; these two amusements will never do any harm
to the world."
— Voltaire

I really enjoy teaching middle school students and this is my ninth year at
NSMS. I am excited to be the humanities AIS/Enrichment teacher for 2012-2013.
In the past, I have taught sixth grade humanities, literacy workshop, 6th-8th
grade reading, AIS(academic support) for humanities, and the writing cycle.
Prior to teaching at North Shore, I taught 7th and 8th grade English at Great
Neck South Middle School.

In my free time, I love to spend time with my husband, Craig, my wonderful
children, Colin, Meghan and Kevin and my chocolate Lab, Wrigley. For
exercise, I love to take walks through Sea Cliff. Although, I support the NY
Yankees,I must admit, Fenway Park is my favorite MLB stadium (I've
visited 15. My other "favorite things" include: traveling, ice cream,
chocolate, Cape Cod, dancing, and a good book that I find myself thinking
about again and again even after I've finished reading it!

Even when I am really busy, I try to find time to read. I especially love to
read on the beach or before I go to sleep. Whether I am reading fiction or
non-fiction, a good book pulls me in with an emotional attachment to its
characters. I also love to read historical fiction and learn about time
periods that interest me.

My favorite young adult books include The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins,
Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech, and The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John
Boyne. Some of my favorite classic books include The Velveteen Rabbit by
Margery Williams, The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett and Rebecca,by
Daphne du Maurier. My more recent favorite titles are The Help by Kathryn
Stockett, Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay, and Unbroken by Laura
Hillenbrand.

Mission For My Classes

I hope for my students to feel comfortable and confident as they grow into
strong readers, writers, thinkers, and friends. I want them to dig deeper
and participate in courageous conversations, to practice reading strategies,
to learn challenging vocabulary and to write effectively. Together we will
learn new and exciting things and be proud of our accomplishments. I look
forward to having a fun year together in sixth grade!
