The ESL goals articulate the English language competencies that English language learners need to acquire in order to become fully proficient in English and achieve the same challenging content standards as their English speaking peers.

  • ESL is an acronym standing for English as a Second Language.

  • TESOL stands for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.

  • ESL classes are NOT bilingual in nature.

  • A certified ESL teacher does NOT need to speak any of the many native languages that his/her students may speak.

  • Beginning ESL instruction occurs IN ENGLISH, using sheltered techniques, numerous hands-on activities, many pictures, body movements, gestures, and realia to teach English vocabulary.

  • English vocabulary will be taught through thematic units which are content based and through literature.

  • ESL classes are taught during regularly scheduled 40 minute periods.
