School Psychologist

Hi! My name is Mrs. Roenick and I am the school psychologist at the Oak
Grove School. School psychologists have specialized training in both
psychology and education. They use their training and skills to team with
educators, parents, and other mental health professionals to ensure that
every child learns in a safe, healthy, and supportive environment.

School psychologists tailor their sevices to the particular needs of each
child and each situation. School psychologists use many different approaches
including consultation, assessment, intervention, prevention and education.

School psycholigists' distinct expertise includes:

*Knowledge of school culture and systems and how these support or undermine,
student learning and development.

*Understanding children's mental health and how it affects learning and
behaviors and how support services can be integrated into the school
processes;knowing how community services can best dovetail with school-based
services.

*Assessing school climate and recommending interventions on topics like
school safety measures and instructional modifications consistent with a
positive learning enviornment.

*Assessing barriers to learning and linking assessments to inteventions;
distinguishing the impact of culture, language, poverty and family issues
from emotional health, instructional, systems-level and child-specific
learning problems.

*Understanding learning and curricular expectations; knowing how to modify
instruction, implement interventions, measure student progress, establish
outcomes measures, and design academic accomodations.

*Understanding classroom dynamics and the demands on and capacities of
teachers.

*Grounding in relevant regulations, statutes and case law; understanding
reporting requirements, consent, privacy and disclosure mandates.

*Collaboration and consulatation with teachers, administrators and parents,
team facilitation and the team approach to problem solving.

*Implementing prevention and intervention programs.

*Data based decision making ( collecting, interpreting and making
recommendations based on reasearch based and school genereated data).
