Homework

SECOND SEMESTER
MONDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 2009
PERIODS A AND E - We began Unit 3 of the text.
Using the text (p. 216-217), students wrote down 6 or 7 items under "Notes on
Literaure" that they felt were significant to show progress and change in the
United States from 1800-1870. We then looked at the picture of Niagara Falls
and the quote on pages 214-215 to show how the United States was viewed as a
land of great opportunity. All of this demonstrates how the United States
began having a its own literature which had great variety. We started
reading "Fall of the House of Usher" on page 296.
Homework: Read the first three pages of " . . . Usher" (297-top of 300)
and write a paragraph about the mood of the story. Be sure to include
specific details from the story.

PERIODS B, C, AND H - We began Unit 3 of the text.
We began with a discussion about faith and religion, and whether or not one
would be willing to fight or die for one's faith and religion. Going back to
1517, we looked at the history of England through 1660, realizing that one's
faith during these tumultuous years really was a matter of life or death as
people took their beliefs very seriously. We then began looking at the life
of Milton and the beginning of his Paradise Lost.
Homework: Read through the excerpt from Paradise Lost and answer the Check
your Comprehension questions at the end.
