The election was a three-way race: Woodrow Wilson, Democrat, William Howard Taft, Republican, and Roosevelt, Progressive. Wilson won with Roosevelt finishing a distant second. |

1905 - Treaty of Portsmouth In 1905 President Roosevelt helped negotiate a treaty between Russia and Japan to end their war, called the Russo-Japanese War. For his efforts, TR would receive the Nobel Peace Prize. |

1918 TR learned of the death of his youngest son Quentin (1897-1918) in July of 1918. Quentin, a fighter pilot for the US Army Air Corps in WWI, was shot down by the Germans behind enemy lines.
