December 10, 2009 Homework Sheet	Mr. Appell
	Name_______________ 5-____

TIMELINE (1823-1838) The Era of Jackson
1823 – James Monroe issues Monroe Doctrine: US declares the western
hemisphere is off-limits to European colonization.

1824 – Four-way race for President (all Democratic-Republicans):
CANDIDATE
POSITION STATE POPULAR VOTE
ELECTORAL VOTE
1. John Quincy Adams (1767-1848) Secretary of State
	Mass. 30.9% 84
2. Andrew Jackson (1767-1845) Senator
	Tenn. 41.3% 99
3. Henry Clay (1777-1852) Speaker of the House
	Kentucky 13.0% 37
4. William H. Crawford (1772-1834) Secretary of Treasury
	Georgia 11.2% 41

Since no candidate received a majority of the electoral votes, the election
was decided in the House of Representatives. Henry Clay influenced other
members to vote for Adams instead of Jackson. The final results were: Adams
13 states, Jackson 7 states, Crawford 4 states. Adams became the 6th
president, and he named Clay as his Secretary of State. Jackson’s supporters
were outraged and they formed their own party, the Jacksonian Democrats which
became the Democrats.

accepts the Compromise Tariff of Henry Clay which lowered taxes.
1833 – National Republicans, Anti-Masons and other anti-Jacksonians found the
Whig Party led by Henry Clay and John Quincy Adams. The Whigs’ goal was to
make Congress more powerful to oppose President Jackson, keep tariffs high,
and finally, to make improvements in the roads, canals and railroads of the
United States.
1836 – Martin Van Buren elected, continuing Democrats control of the White
House.
