PROCESS
1. Under the direction of the school counselors, you will take The Self-
Directed Search Career Explorer Self-Assessment . When completed, you will
have developed a Holland Code, which is an interest and ability profile. You
will use this code to find matching careers in the Self-Directed Search
Careers Booklet. You must choose at least two careers to research. The
school counselors, the LMS, and the English teachers will be circulating
throughout the class and will be available to answer any questions that you
have.

2. Using the Career Brief which the counselors distribute, you will gather
detailed information about each chosen career. You will use at least two
Internet Sources and one Print Source posted on this WebQuest to find the
data required to complete the Career Brief.

3. Should a lead take you in a new direction, follow it. There is no
predetermined answer for you search; the best answer is what best suits you.

4. Under the counselor’s supervision, you will log onto
http://www.nycareeerzone.org and create an account.

Your user name will be your first intitial and last name, followed by the
month and day of your birth.

For example, a student named John Doe, birth date July 19, 1992, would have a
user name of Jdoe719

The password for each person in your class will be Plainedge2010.

Once you have created an account, you will create a portfolio of your
interests, abilities, extra-curricular activities, community service, and
work experience. This portfolio will be saved on the nycareerzone site and
will follow you through high school. You may add information to your
portfolio at any time, from any computer anywhere. In your Junior and Senior
years, you can print it out to reference in writing an activity resume for
you college and work applications.

5. You will complete the case presentation, a personalized essay.

5a. ESSAY
You will write a personalized essay that:
		1. Reports data on and analyzes, at least 2 careers.
		2. Compares/contrasts the careers chosen.
                3. Comes to a conclusion regarding which career best
                     suits you.
		4. Provides supporting evidence for that conclusion.
		5. Reflects on this experience

Your personalized essay must include the resources used
(at least two Internet sources and one print source), as well as the
following characteristics of the chosen career:

•	Physical setting
•	Daily tasks performed
•	Working Hours/Schedule
•	Nature of the work, working conditions
•	Employment Outlook
•	Education/training required
•	Colleges/universities/trade schools/unions that provide
education/training which prepare a person for the career
•	Entry level salary
•	Salary of a person established in the career
•	Talents/personal characteristics of someone who is successful in the
             career
•	Advantages/disadvantages of this career *

*Note - The advantages/disadvantages of a career vary from individual to
individual, according to personal preferences. One person might like a
career in which someone only works daytime hours considering those hours an
advantage, while another person who likes to sleep late in the morning and
stay up late/work nights would consider those hours a disadvantage.
