Parents: Please scroll down to find copies of our daily book reports.
Dear Parents:
There will be an important test on the attached list of contractions in
January. During the holiday vacation I would like the students to write each
contraction (didn’t = did not, hasn’t = has not, etc.) equation three times.
I would also like the students to write three sentences for each contraction
(didn’t, hasn’t, etc.).
If your child finds this homework assignment too lengthy, he/she may write the
contraction equations one time and one sentence for each contraction.
Those students who would like a challenging assignment during the holiday
recess are encouraged to write a story with at least three contractions in the
story. If your child writes a story using contractions, please have your
child underline the contractions.
Please be reminded that it is very important for parents to encourage their
children to do their very neatest work for all homework assignments.
You will find this homework assignment posted on my website.
Please do not hesitate to contact me at school or by e mail
(joanpaul26@aol.com) if you have any questions or concerns about your child’s
progress.
Sincerely yours,
Joan Kavanagh

Dear Parents and Guardians,
I look forward to working with you as your child’s first grade teacher.
Everyday, my primary goal will be to make learning exciting and fun for your
child.
Every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday (not on Friday), your child
will bring home a storybook in his/her backpack. Please read this book to
your child or encourage your child to read the book to you if he or she is
able to read the book. Please try your best to help your child return these
books on a daily basis.
In September, parents and guardians will be asked to attend Parents as
Partners Night on Monday, September 22. Your child will be bringing home
more information about this important night. Starting on Tuesday, September
23, your child will have a homework sheet on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and
Thursday for his/her take home reading book. You will find your child’s take
home book and his/her homework sheet in the red homework folder. At Parents as
Partner’s Night, I will explain the homework sheets for the take home books.
Please be reminded that I will not start sending home homework sheets for the
take home books until after Parents as Partners Night. For your convenience,
your child’s homework sheets for the take home books will be posted on Mrs.
Kavanagh’s web site.
For September, our author of the month is Marc Brown who writes the Arthur
books. It is a very good idea to take your child to the library or bookstore
to look for more Arthur books.
Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you ever have any questions about your
child’s adjustment to first grade. I am always eager to listen to any
parental concerns.
Sincerely yours,
Joan Kavanagh
Monday’s Daily Assignment for the Take Home Book

Parents and Guardians: On the worksheet below, please help your child copy
the first sentence from his/her daily take home book. Please remind your
child to start the sentence with an upper case letter and to put a
punctuation mark at the end of the sentence. It is also very helpful to
take
the time to remind your child to do his/her neatest handwriting. Some
children will need to be reminded to put finger spaces between words. These
reminders provide children with the guidance they need when they are
learning to become good writers. Your cooperation and help are greatly
appreciated by the teacher.
