Welcome Parents, Students, Interested Web-Surfers,
This web site is a new tool to communicate what's happening in the Middle
School Reading classes at SCCS. What is consistently emphasized,(ask the
students how often we work with the key vocabulary words!)are knowing and
using strategies to help understand what we're reading.
The reading materials do vary, currently some of us are just beginning
Maniac Magee written by Jerry Spinelli. This story features a troubled boy
who desperately needs a family and home, yet he guides a community to lessen
racial hatred. Using the strategies good readers use to understand what they
read, the story provides powerful character education. Some of the reading
classes are reading the seasonally correct Skeleton Man by Joseph Bruchac.
Again, using the strategies of questioning, clarifying, visualizing,
summarizing and others help understand and enjoy a good scary story. All of
the reading classes are using the Soar to Success program materials to
reinforce the strategies.
