Speech-language pathologists are formally trained to prevent, screen,
identify, assess, diagnose, refer, provide intervention for, and counsel
persons with, or who are at risk for: articulation, fluency, voice,
language, communication, swallowing and related disabilities. In addition to
engaging in activities to reduce or prevent communication disabilities,
speech-language pathologists also counsel and educate families or
professionals about these disorders and their management (American Speech-
Language-Hearing Association, 1996c.)
According to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, speech-language
pathology includes:
1) identification of children with speech and/or language impairments
2) appraisal and diagnosis of specific speech and/or language impairments
3) referral for medical or other professional attention necessary for the
habilitation of children with speech or language impairments
4) provisions of speech and language services for the prevention of
communication impairments or the habilitation of children with such
impairments
5) counseling and guidance for parents, children and teachers regarding
speech and/or language impairments
