Marist College Partner Programs

Project MOBILE

(Motivating Our Boys Into Literacy Enjoyment)

Hagan School's 4th and 5th grade boys are participating in a partnership with the Marist College men's lacrosse team called Project MOBILE.  Marist College student-athletes visit our students and promote literacy by encouraging boys to read. Students interview these athletes and learn how reading has enriched their lives. The athletes offer students tips and tricks for reading and provide personal anecdotes on how they got hooked on reading.  The athletes visit our school to encourage these reluctant readers to reach for books for enjoyment. The Marist players serve as role-models and encourage the boys to achieve in school by helping with homework, reading stories and playing outdoor activities. In the spring, a field trip to a Marist College lacrosse game is planned.

GREAT USA

(Girls Reading Enthusiastically Across The USA)

GREAT USA offers our 4th and 5th grade girls the opportunity to work with Marist College student-athletes as well.  They will read books from different genres that are set in various states across in the USA.  In 5th grade, each student will complete a GREAT USA passport that will identify specific states that were “visited” through these books, which include a variety of themes such as the popular American Girl series.  Fourth graders will participate in the Book-It program for reading. The students will share their successes with their Marist College female role models when they visit our school for at least 2 after school sessions a semester for a “Girls Book Club.”  The athletes will celebrate each girl’s accomplishments and offer encouragement and motivation to continue reading by sharing their own personal academic successes and also sharing anecdotes on how reading has enriched their life as a student-athlete.
