Welcome to Hagan! Our Music Department Team is comprised of:
Mrs. Pennie Burgess teaches small group lessons and Band at Hagan Elementary
and Todd Middle School (6th Grade Band). Any interested students in grades
4 and 5 have the opportunity to play a band instrument (Flute,Oboe,
Clarinet,Saxophone,Trumpet,French Horn,Trombone,Baritone,Bells/Percussion).
Students participate in one of two levels: Beginner Band (1st year
players)and Advanced Band (2nd year of playing). All students receive one 40
minute small group lesson per week. In addition, members of the Advanced
band attend two before school rehearsals per week. Mrs Burgess holds
permanent certification with a Bachelor and Masters of Music Education.
This school year is her 12th year teaching in the Spackenkill School District.
Mrs. Randie Ratick teaches both the general and choral music programs. All
students in grades K through 5 are actively engaged in classroom music
instruction once every four days for a forty minute class period. We
continually work towards the NY State Standards for the Arts in a
comprehensive approach designed to help every student develop essential
skills including singing, playing instruments, reading and writing music,
analyzing, moving, composing, and improvising. Our choral program is a
before school activity that is not auditioned and available to any student
in grades 3, 4 and 5. Mrs. Ratick holds permanent certification with a
Bachelor and Master in Fine Arts K-12, as well as Elementary Education N-6.
This school year is her 31st year in teaching as well as her 5th year as the
K-5 Music Curriculum Coordinator.
Ms. Kim Valentine teaches string lessons and orchestra at both Hagan and
Nassau Elementary Schools. Any interested students in grades 3,4 and 5 have
the opportunity to play a string instrument (Violin, Viola, Cello or Bass).
Students participate in one of three levels: Beginner Strings (1st year
players), Silver Strings (2nd year players), and Gold Strings (3rd year
players). All students receive one 40 minute small group lesson per week.
In addition, members of the Silver and Gold Strings also attend one before
school orchestra rehearsal per week. Ms. Valentine holds permanent
certification with a Bachelor and Masters of Music Education. This school
year is her 11th year teaching in the Spackenkill School District.

Every child is musically expressive and deserves the opportunity to explore
that capability. Our programs, under the direction of Mrs. Pennie Burgess,
Mrs. Randie Ratick and Ms. Kim Valentine, offers these opportunities to
everyone from the hesitant learner to the highly skilled, gifted musician.
