Dear Parents,

     The holiday spirit has begun to make its way into room 23.  We’re already talking about St Nicholas, Hanukkah, and Christmas. If any family would like to share about holiday traditions they have with their family, by all means contact me and we’ll set up a date and time. 

     When children observe ice cubes melting in their cups or steam hitting a bathroom mirror, they are watching matter change.  During the next few weeks your child will learn how matter (everything that takes up space) can change- from a solid to a liquid, to a gas, and back again. 

     In math I continue to introduce different strategies for adding numbers.  We’ve been talking about double addition number facts (1+1, 2+2, 3+3, 4+4, 5+5, etc.), and I encourage you to help your child take notice of these number patterns, and if ready, begin committing these facts to memory.  Once children commit these facts to memory, they have a better understanding of a doubles plus one equation.  For example, if they know the number sentence 2+2=4, then the double plus one number sentence would be 2+3=5.

     Hagan Elementary will be hosting a Hats On Day event this Friday, December 4th.  The children will donate $1.00 for the privilege of wearing a hat of their choice to school.  Why hats?  Many times, students battling pediatric cancer must wear hats to school following chemotherapy or radiation treatments that cause hair loss.  The monies raised from Hats On Day will be dedicated to supporting the mission of the Foundation for Children with Cancer, which is to financially assist the families of children with cancer.       

     I would like to extend a special thanks to all of you for sharing paper goods, drinks, and baked goods last week.  Your generosity is always appreciated.  The performance was superb!!!
