11th Grade American Literature -- Course Description
This course combines Regents preparation with the study of American
Literature from early Native American to contemporary works. The class will
explore and attempt to define what is uniquely American about these works,
focusing especially on voice and american voices. We will consider
typically American themes such as individualism, community, freedom, and
equality, and we will address race, class, and gender issues that have
bedeviled American society. We will examine how literary elements such as
characterization, tone, patterns of imagery and symbolism help to develop
and underscore themes in a work of literature. At the same time, we will
work on strengthening our own voices and ability to express ideas
effectively in writing.
English 10H -- Course Description
This course surveys world literature, with a special focus on women's
empowerment and varying points of view. We will consider changing images of
women and how differently people see the world from different vantage
points. You will draw on your own knowledge, insights, and experience to
interpret and evaluate the actions, attitudes, and perceptions of diverse
characters and the authors who created them. Further, the class will
examine how various literary elements such as theme, characterization,
imagery, symbolism, tone, irony, and figurative language help express
attitudes and points of view--joy and sorrow, love and hate, prejudice and
respect for others.
