St. Dominic Offers Students an Excellent Education . We are currently registering students for the 2008-2009 school year. If you are interested, please call the school (516-922-4233) and arrange to pick up information or visit the school. Although we had open house in January, we recognize that some people may have missed it or are still investigating schools. Our classes are from grades pre-k to 8th grade. The pre-k students must be 3 or 4 years old by December 1, 2008, and we offer a few options in the program . A kindergarten student should be 5 by December 1, 2008; a full K program gives students an advange in their early years. We do not take eighth graders unless s/he is transferring from another Catholic School because of a change of address. You should visit all the different pages of our Web site to learn about our programs. Of course, seeing the school first hand is always a satisfying option. Our school is Catholic and teachers teach the Gospel values as well as the traditional practices of our Catholic faith. The second graders make First Communion and First Penance (Reconciliation). Eighth graders make their Confirmation. Religion is taught every day and students are involved in planning the First Friday Masses each month. One of the highlights of the year is the May Crowning. We have a strong physical education program in which each class participates twice a week. Many Catholic schools are down to once a week because of budget restraints. But physical education is a priority to us. The library is fully automated and boasts of 20,000 volumes, all of which can be found immediately on the library computers. Library skills are taught and each student learns to use the system in his primary years. The computer program permeates the school day. Besides the formal lessons offered by the computer teacher, each classroom is equipped with a Smartboard and individual PC's. Using the newest technology affords the teachers the opportunity of many options. Reading and mathematics programs are up to date and we teach writing skills as early as kindergarten. Script (cursive writing) begins in the third grade and continues to be taught formally. Science, language arts, social studies, and math are all tested through the New York State Standards and individual achievement tests (IOWA's). We have a cafeteria that offers hot lunches every day. Many children choose to buy lunch while others carry their lunch.
