Social Studies

Chapter 15: Reform and a New American Culture

Vocabulary Test May 9th; Chapter Test: May 14th.

Homework: Monday: workbook pages 154-156; Tuesday: STUDY!!!; Wednesday: ; Thursday: ; Friday: .

Current Events Due Dates:  3/7, 3/13, 4/4, 4/11, 4/18, 4/25, 5/9, 5/16, 5/23, 6/6.

All students are required to complete a current event assignment, every week, for the entire school year (unless o do therwise instructed). The assignment will be due on Friday, (unless there is a day off). The Current Event will count towards the students trimester average. Once it is returned it should be placed in your Social Studies binder.

Each assignment is to be completed on computer paper and must include the following:

A news article that deals with the United States from the CURRENT WEEK. Articles may be taken from a newspaper, magazine, or the Internet (no photocopies of the articles). If a student is going to use the Internet, the article must be printed out and it must be from a valid news source web site (ex: Newsday, CNN.com, News12.com, etc). If a student does not receive a newspaper and does not have access to the Internet, the computer room in the school is available for them to use.

Articles must be taped or stapled onto a piece of computer paper (please no glue).

The student must include a summary of their article, which is to be typed on the computer, under the article. Their summary should include an introduction, body and their opinion as the conclusion. The students should also include their opinion of the article under the summary (for example: how did the story make you feel? What did you think about it? etc).

If a student is going to be absent, due to vacation, doctors appointment, etc., please make sure that they hand in the assignment before the end of the week.

Each current event will be worth 10 points. The breakdown is as follows: 3 points for the article; 3 points for the summary and 4 points for their opinion. At the end of the 2nd trimester the students will have handed in 10 current events and the grades will be combined to make one test grade.
