HOMEWORK
Homework will be assigned on a daily basis. Each teacher will distribute a homework sheet to each student on the first day of each week (Typically Monday). Each homework sheet will contain assignments for the week as well as a note that will give appropriate updates for the week. Homework Books:
The homework will be done in one book. The reading, writing and math homework are expected to be completed in a marble notebook which we are calling the "Homework Notebook". The "Homework Planner", which is supplied by the school, is used to store the weekly homework sheet and serve as a vehicle of communication between home and school. As the students evolve throughout the school year, changes will be made to the homework format.
Spelling:
The weekly homework sheet will also contain the 10 "words we should know" for the week. There will be no formal spelling test given for these words. These words will be practiced during the week both at school and at home during homework time.
Reading:
Students are required to read 15 minutes a night. The students may read independently, with a parent or with friends. They may read any book of their choice as long as it is of appropriate level and long enough to entertain the child for at least 15 minutes. Parents are strongly encouraged to help their child choose the five books for each week, discuss each book with your child, and ensure your child's response in their homework notebook. A response will be written for Monday through Thursday's reading homework in the homework notebook.
Please help your child choose an appropriate book, read for 15 minutes, discuss the book and respond to the writing on a nightly basis.

Borrowing Books: Students are encouraged to borrow one book at a time from the classroom library to help them with their reading logs. They may keep that book for the amount of time that they are reading it. The school will also be sending home some book ordering opportunities during the first months of school. Lastly, the students are encouraged to sign up for a library card at one of the local libraries. A few of the closest libraries are:

Homework Sheets:
Students will be given one homework sheet per week and are expected to be responsible for it through the entire week. The sheet will be kept in the homework planner book. This homework sheet is intended to improve communication between school and home. Homework will not be done during class time. Homework is an essential part of your child's education because it reviews the concepts your child learned throughout the day and develops discipline and responsibility. Thank you for your support.
