For Parents

               Middle/High School Library Media Center
                          November 2009

To our Tuckahoe Parents,

Thank you for supporting our library programs and our library's Book Fair
2009 Fundraiser.

Our high school programs are well underway with history classes exploring one
of the new databases, Global Issues in Context.

Shakespeare studies are part of grade 9 through 12. Readings and research
have begun.

Middle School readers are moving through their purchases from the book fair
or from selections in our library or classroom offerings. The most popular
reading genres this month is fantasy and humorous fiction.

Our eighth graders are taking an elective unit called "Information Literacy"
where they explore electronic tools in our subscription databases as well as
dive into print resources. Careers, Health, History and Science topics
research. Grades are determined by daily work. There are no tests or
homework. But, we are finding that our students are so curious that many are
trying their new skills out on their home computers!

What is different for our High School Class this year?
We continue to build on their research skills, exploring more advanced
resources, digging deeper, asking more questions and getting them ready for
scholastic challenges ahead. We have state of the art labs and
resources. Shakespeare analysis, book reviews, and history draw our classes
into the library and computer labs for inquiry based analysis more often than
in prior years. Internet access speeds will soon increase significantly as we
continue to upgrade the technology infrastructure.

All new students grades 7 to 12 should arrange for a Library Media Center
orientation this month. Stop at the circ desk anytime to arrange a 15 minute
orientation on your database access.
Parents: Please ask your child if he/she has stopped in. We want them to
know about all the print and electronic resources available. Let’s not wait
until the first project to “catch up.”

Several new electronic resources were added this summer. History and Global
Issues In Context have been added. Students access 4 to 10 databases
throughout the school year. Advanced research skills are introduced at every
opportunity.

Projects and single-night reading assignments encourage exploration of
print, electronic books, audio/visual resources, specialized journals, and
databases provided by the school district and the Tuckahoe School Foundation.

Library staff are available from 7:30 A.M. to 2:30P.M. everyday with extended
hours available Tuesday and any day by appointment. Ongoing
collaborations with the entire teaching staff throughout the school year keep
us in sync with assignments and needed resources. Our collection is always
being replenished to meet those classroom goals.

Students are encouraged to stop in for assistance/guidance as their
assignments progress. A Microsoft Publishing Software specialist is also
available.
