You estimate there to be 90 jelly beans in a jar. If there are actually 130 jelly beans, your percentage error is...

% Error = Measured Value - Accepted Value   x 100
         _________________________________

                  Accepted Value

Note: Remember, you do not have to memorize this formula because
      it will be given to you when you take the quiz.

Answer: The Measured value for the # of jelly beans is 90 and
        the Accepted value (the actual # of jelly beans) is 130.

        Now we plug in our #s and do some math:

        Measured (90) - Accepted (130)  x 100
       _______________________________

                Accepted (130)

                 90 - 130   x 100
        =      ___________

                   130

        =         40       x 100
               ___________

                  130

        =        0.30769   x 100

        =              30.8%

          Therefore, your estimation was off by 30.8%.

Briefly explain why we have seasons in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

We have seasons because the earth is on a tilt and the amount of direct
sunlight hitting the earth varies (changes) during the course of the year.

When we experience summer in the Northern Hemisphere, it is because the earth
is tilted toward the sun which gives the Norther Hemisphere more direct
sunlight. During this time, the Southern Hemisphere does not get direct
sunlight and they experience Winter.

When we experience winter in the Northern Hemisphere, it is because the earth
is tilted away from the sun which gives the Norther Hemisphere less direct
sunlight. During this time, the Southern Hemisphere gets more direct sunlight
and they experience Summer.
Back to Top

What common mistake do people make regarding summer and winter?

People think that the earth is actually closer to the sun in the summer and
further from the sun in the winter when in actuality it is the opposite (the
sun is truly closer to the earth in the winter and the sun is truly further
from the sun in the summer).

Define measure.

Measure means to compare and object or process to a standard.
Back to Top

List some measurement tips.

When measuring a line, be sure that your ruler is straight (parallel) with the
line.

When using a ruler, it's always a good idea to start at 0 whenever possible.

Units should be listed after your number.

Some ruler edges start at 0 and some do not so be aware before you start
measuring.

List some common metric units in order of decreasing size.

Kilometer, meter, centimeter, decimeter, millimeter, micrometer
Back to Top

List some common metric conversions.

1 kilometer (km)  = 1000 meters (m)

1 meter (m)       = 100 centimeters (cm)

1 centimeter (cm) = 10 millimeters (mm)

1 millimeter (mm) = 1000 micrometers (um)
Back to Top

What is the main difference between precision and accuracy?

Precision is the repeatability of a measurement and accuracy is the closeness
a measurement is to the actual (accepted) value.
Back to Top

Which metric unit would be most appropriate for measuring the length of your sneaker?

Centimeters

List one reason why there has been a higher percentage of kidney stones found in younger people.

There is a higher percentage of kidney stones found in younger people due to:
drinking too much soda, eating/drinking foods that are high in salt (NaCl),
eating foods that are high in fat or going on diets that are high in protein.

A person's foot length is 20.0 cm. If the Height : Foot length ratio is 5.8, what is the person's height?

It's always a good idea to list your important information first:

Foot length:                 20.0cm

Height to Foot length Ratio: 5.8

Height of the person: H (H is what we are looking for)
                               (This is called our variable)
__H__    =    __H__
  F             F

__H__ can be expressed as a ratio. We have that ratio, it's 5.8!
  F

so we can now plug in our numbers:

5.8      =    __H__
             20.0cm

We can now set up a proportion. We can do this by taking 5.8 and placing it
over 1 so that one side of the equal sign resembles the other.

__5.8__      =      __H__
   1               20.0cm

Now we can cross multiply:

5.8 x 20.0cm = 1 x H

   116.0 cm  =   H

Therefore, the height of the person could very well be 116.0 cm.

A person's height is 200.0cm. If the Height : Foot length ratio is 5.8, what is the person's footlength?

It's always a good idea to list your important information first:

Foot length: F (F is what we are looking for)
                               (This is called our variable)

Height to Foot length Ratio: 5.8

Height of the person: 200.0 cm

__H__    =    __H__
  F             F

__H__ can be expressed as a ratio. We have that ratio, it's 5.8!
  F

so we can now plug in our numbers:

5.8      =    __200.0cm__
                   F

We can now set up a proportion. We can do this by taking 5.8 and placing it
over 1 so that one side of the equal sign resembles the other.

__5.8__      =      __200.0 cm__
   1                     F

Now we can cross multiply:

5.8 x F      = 1 x 200.0 cm

  5.8F       =   200.0 cm

Since we are looking for F, we have to get F ALONE!

We can get F ALONE by separating it from the 5.8 and we do this
by dividing both sides by 5.8:

__5.8F__     =  __200.0 cm__
  5.8               5.8

so 5.8 divided by 5.8 gives us 1F or just F which is what we needed.

Note: We divided both sides by 5.8 because what is done to one
      side must be done to the other side.

So F        =  __200.0 cm__
                  5.8

   F        =    34.5 cm

Therefore, the foot length of the person is 34.5 cm.
