What is scientific notation?

A short way of representing very large and very small numbers without writing
all of the place-holding zeros.

List the steps to convert a number from standard form to scientific notation form.

Step 1: Write the number without the place-holding zeros.

Step 2: Place the decimal point after the first digit so that
there is only one # to the left of the decimal point.

Step 3: Find the exponent by counting the # of places that you
moved the decimal point from the original number.

Step 4: Write the # in scientific notation.

What does 10^6 mean?

                                 6
10^6 is another way of writing 10 which means:

10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10

  100 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10

      1,000 x 10 x 10 x 10

         10,000 x 10 x 10

             100,000 x 10

                1,000,000 which is One Million

When expressing a # in scientific notation, there should only be how many #s to the left of the decimal?

Only one # should appear to the left of the decimal in order for it to be in
proper scientific notation form.

            23
So 6.02 x 10 is correct because 6 is the only # to the left of the decimal.

Briefly describe how to read a triple beam balance.

Look at each rider and see to what # does it point.

Add up the # shown for each rider
(There are 3 riders so you should have 3 amounts for the total).

Be sure to list your total # with the proper units (grams).

How can you get more practice with the triple beam balance?

Go back to the LABORATORY SKILLS LINKS PAGE of the website and under the
Measurement column click Triple Beam Balance Practice and this will give you
the virtual triple beam balance. You can also click More Triple Beam Balance
for a tutorial.

Describe the difference between mass and weight.

Mass is the amount of matter in an object.
Mass is measured in milligrams, grams, and kilograms.

Weight is a measure of the force of gravity that acts upon an object's mass.
Weight is measured in Newtons.

What must be performed before utilizing a triple beam balance or spring scale?

They must be calibrated.

What happens to the mass of Mr. Greco if we teleported him to the moon?

It remains constant because mass is the amount of matter in an object. He
would however weigh six times less than what he weighs on earth because the
moon has six times less gravity than earth.

The law of conservation of mass states that matter...

cannot be created or destroyed, it just gets changed from one form to another
form. The mass of the matter you start with is always equal to the mass of
the matter with which you end.

How would you determine the mass of 10.0 ml of water?

Calibrate your triple beam balance.

Find the mass of an empty graduated cylinder.

Fill it up with 10.0 ml of water.

Be sure the balance is calibrated.

Find the mass of the graduated cylinder with the water.

Then you subtract:

Mass of graduated cylinder with water
- Mass of graduated cylinder
---------------------------------------
  Mass of water

Describe how to determine the volume of a regular shaped object.

Use a metric ruler to determine the length, width, and height.

Plug the #s into the formula (V = L x W x H) & calculate.

Describe 1 way to determine the volume of an irregular shaped object.

Fill a graduated container with water and measure the initial volume.

Carefully place the object in the container so it's fully submerged.

Measure the final volume of the water.

Subtract the initial volume from the final volume of water.

Length of cube = 5.0 cm, Width = 3.0 cm, Height = 1.0cm, what is the volume?

V = L x W x H

V = 5.0cm x 3.0cm x 1.0cm

          3
V = 15.0cm

The volume of an irregular shaped object is equal to...

The volume of an irregular shaped object is equal to the amount of water that
rises because the object and the water can't occupy the same space at the same
time. Therefore, the amount of water that rises is equal to the volume of the
object.
