FAQFrequently Asked Questions: This page contains answers to common questions of students and parents.
How often is homework assigned Students are assigned life science homework Monday through Friday from the first day of school in September through the end of June. Over vacation students are given the opportunity to work on their major science projects. What type of homework assignments are given? Homework is designed to introduce, review, and reinforce life science concepts and skills. Homework assignments include text book reading and written assignments, diagramming and labeling structures, interpreting data through graphing; and interpreting science literature. What happens if I can't complete my science homework one night? Mmmm. I know that you have many other activities and responsibilities other than science homework. If you really have too much to do in one evening and cannot get to your science homework I will understand, REALLY!. I only ask that you speak to me about it. Homework is collected at the start of every class period. Every homework is read, corrected, recorded, and returned to students the following day. The district homework policy is strictly adhered to in Life Science. What textbook is used in 7th grade Life Science? Scientists must be excellent communicators and therefore reading, writing, and speaking are integral parts of the Life Science curriculum. Life Science is a heavy "content" science as opposed to a heavy math science such as physics therefore reading is the most necessary skill for the biologist. There are two texts used in 7th grade Life Science - Globe Fearon "Concepts and Challenges" and Houghton Mifflin "Life Science." Textbooks are assigned based upon student reading levels. Do students need to bring their textbooks to class? Textbooks are generally distributed within the first 2 weeks of the school year. Textbooks are to be brought home and to be kept home for the entire school year. We learn science by doing science ...so textbooks are NEVER used in the classroom. What supplies must students bring to class every day? Students must bring their homework, science binder, looseleaf, pens, and colored pencils to Life Science class every day. How often are science tests given? Tuesday is the official test day in Life Science. Generally science tests are given every 2 to 3 weeks depending upon the curriculum. There are NO surprise quizzes given in Life Science. What if I have a question or problem with the assigned work? Official Extra Help is every Monday 2:30 to 3:30. I am also available EVERY day during lunch and immediately following school until 3:00 for students who have questions. You can always email me at anneteach44@aol.com during afternoon/evening hours or over weekends/vacations if the question cannot wait until the next day. Are any projects assigned during the year? FOUR major science projects are assigned throughout the school year. Virus Brochure Project. Students research and design an informational brochure on an assigned virus. Scientist Research Paper. Students research a scientist, write a 6-8 page type written paper, and design a visual project reflecting the scientist's life and achievements. Earth Day Project. Students research a problem affecting planet earth. Students choose what type of visual or written project they will complete reflecting their knowledge of their topic. Biome Informational Cube. Students research one biome and create a 6 sided informational cube with specific research criteria. Environment. It is assigned in early February and due on or about Earth Day (April 22nd.) What if I am completely lost and do not understand anything?! There are plenty of things I do not understand like the game of football :( so I know how you feel and will do everything to help you! You simply have to let me know. You can tell me in person, you can leave a note on my desk, show up at extra help or during lunch, or simply say "help!" and everything will be OK. Promise! |
