How often is homework assigned
Students are assigned life science homework Monday through Friday from the
first day of school in September through the end of June. Over vacation
students are given the opportunity to work on their major science projects.
--------------------------------------
What type of homework assignments are given?
Homework is designed to introduce, review, and reinforce life science
concepts and skills. Homework assignments include text book reading and
written assignments, diagramming and labeling structures, interpreting data
through graphing; and interpreting science literature.
--------------------------------------
What textbook is used in 7th grade Life Science?
Scientists must be excellent communicators and therefore reading, writing,
and speaking are integral parts of the Life Science curriculum. Life Science
is a heavy "content" science as opposed to a heavy math science such as
physics therefore reading is the most necessary skill for the biologist.
There are two texts used in 7th grade Life Science - Globe Fearon "Concepts
and Challenges" and Houghton Mifflin "Life Science." Textbooks are assigned
based upon student reading levels.
--------------------------------------
Do students need to bring their textbooks to class?
Textbooks are generally distributed within the first 2 weeks of the school
year. Textbooks are to be brought home and to be kept home for the entire
school year. Textbooks are NEVER used in the life science classroom. We learn
life science by doing life science (not by reading about life science.)
--------------------------------------
What supplies must students bring to class every day?
Students must bring their homework, science binder, looseleaf, pens, and
colored pencils to Life Science class every day.
--------------------------------------
Is homework collected?
Homework is collected at the start of every class period. Every homework is
read, corrected, recorded, and
returned to students the following day. The district homework policy is
strictly adhered to in Life Science.
--------------------------------------
How often are science tests given?
Tuesday is the official test day in Life Science. Generally science tests are
given every 2 to 3 weeks depending upon the curriculum. There are NO surprise
quizes given in Life Science.
--------------------------------------
What if I have a question or problem with the assigned work?
Official Extra Help is every Monday 2:30 to 3:30. I am also available EVERY
day during lunch and immediately following school until 3:00 for students who
have questions.
--------------------------------------
Are any projects assigned during the year?
Two MAJOR science projects are assigned throughout the school year. The first
is a research project focusing on the life and achievements of a scientist of
your choice. This project is assigned in early November and due in mid
January. The second project focuses on the problems facing our Living
Environment. It is assigned in early February and due on or about Earth Day
(April 22nd.)
