Occupational Therapy
Occupational therapy is a health profession concerned with how individuals
perform tasks and function in their roles. In a school a child's
occupation is to be a student, play, and complete basic self care tasks.
Through the use of purposeful activities occupational therapists help enhance
a student's ability to be successful in the learning environment.
As an occupational therapist I work closely with staff members to assist
students in achieving goals such as improving fine motor coordination, visual-
motor integration, bilateral integration, strength, endurance, visual
perception, ocular motor skills, and sensory integration. I work
collaboratively with teachers to incorporate aspects of the curriculum into
my treatment sessions and provide them with strategies to maximize each
student's potential in the classroom setting.
Parents also play an important role in a child's occupational therapy
program. It is imperative that children who receive occuapational therapy
services not only participate in therapy sessions in school, but reinforce
skills at home. Parents are always welcomed and encouraged to meet with me
to discuss progress and learn activities for use in the home environment.
Please feel free to contact me at your child's school to make an appointment
to review the occupational therapy program and learn fun activities
to complete at home.
I have always enjoyed working with children and love watching them grow and
reach their goals through therapy. I am thankful for having such a wonderful
profession and look forward to many more years working as an occupational
therapist.
