SATURDAY - MAY 18, 2913 - ON OR CLOSE TO 11:00 PM

EXPLORATIONS WAS A MAJOR SUCCESS!

On Thursday evening, all of my students were invited to attend EXPLORATIONS at Wheeler Avenue. The children and their parents enjoyed a wide variety of workshops, shared their enrichment experiences over dinner and had a wonderful time. Below are some of the many highlights from EXPLORATIONS 2013:

Charcoal and Pastel painting was a big draw!

One lucky young man and his mother had a private one-on-one Journalism seminar with Mr. Andrew Hackmak. Mr. Hackmack is the editor of the Valley Stream Herald.

There was a rumor that some of the parents had as much fun as the children in the Origami Geometry class.

At the CSI Forensics workshop a father and son are trying to determine which suspect caused the crime.

"It looks like Mr. Rosenfeld is guilty. Let's throw the book at him!"

"But look at THIS clue! Not only did Rosenfeld commit the crime, he left his cell phone at the crime scene!"

Two young ladies are preparing their LEGO models for motion. Many simple machines were discussed and demonstrated in a hands-on seminar.

These children and their parents are using binary codes to solve puzzles. Binary code is very instrumental in computer programming.

I would like to thank Mrs. Sells-Asch for coordinating Explorations this year. Thanks also to Dr. Robb-Fund for all of her help in putting everything together and for her welcoming remarks. It was also kind of Dr. Chiacherie from our Board of Education to stop by and show his support of Gifted Education. I would also like to acknowledge Dr. Gayle Steele - the Wheeler Avenue Principal for hosting us and the Wheeler Avenue Custodial Staff for their help and kindness. Finally, I want to thank the parents and children who have enriched me in so many ways this year. I hope you all had a wonderful time!

This week, all of the children will be working on their Independent Study Projects - which will be due soon. Parents can e-mail me any questions that arise.

For the week starting on Monday, May 20 I will be directly working with the children from James A. Dever and Willow Road.

Have a great week!

SUNDAY - MAY 12, 2013 - ON OR CLOSE TO 11:50 PM

I am looking forward to seeing everyone this week at our annual EXPLORATIONS event. I am sure it will be another huge success!

We are at the point of the semester where each student is working on his or her Independent Study. This is also the time of the year where many exciting activities are planned for the children such as: Field Day, Picnics, Music In The Parks, etc. Please help me to keep the children focused on their assignments in between these well-earned events.

This week I will be meeting with my students from James A. Dever and Willow Road.

Have a great night!

FRIDAY - APRIL 26, 2013 - ON OR CLOSE TO 10:15 PM

I hope you don't mind the early entry. I have family obligations on Saturday and Sunday this week and I wanted to make sure I updated everyone on what is happening in the Gifted and Talented Program.

Now that the formal New York State tests are behind us, all of my students will begin working on their Independent Study Projects. Packets will be going home with the children starting on Monday. The Independent Study is an approved project that requires:

1) Research Index Cards that are in the students' own words

2) A formal paper (With both a cover and a works cited page)

3) A rehearsed oral presentation with appropriate visuals (PowerPoint, Posters)

4) A reflective paragraph after the project is delivered

Please note that the requirements are different for all grades and that due dates will be based on our class schedule.

The week beginning April 28 - I will be meeting with my students from Howell Road and Wheeler Avenue.

SUNDAY - APRIL 21, 2013 - ON OR CLOSE TO 1:00 PM

Once again, I would like to wish all of my students good luck on their New York State Mathematics Exams which will begin on Wednesday, April 24. As promised, I will not be assigning any formal homework until Monday, April 29. I would however like all of my students to think about topics they would like to pursue for their Independent Study Projects which will be assigned immediately after the exams.

This week, I will be meeting with my students from James A. Dever and Willow Road. Please note that there will be numerous schedule changes due to the examination schedule and proctoring assignments.

REMINDERS:

1) Save the date - This year our Explorations event will be taking place after school hours on Thursday, May 16 at Wheeler Avenue. Details will follow soon.

2) Ink and Toner Cartridges - Please consider donating your empty printer and copier cartridges. We trade them in conjunction with our technology department to get new materials.

SUNDAY - APRIL 14, 2013 - ON OR CLOSE TO 6:00 PM

I would like to wish all of my students the best of luck on the New York State exams that will be given this week. No homework from me will be assigned or due until the week of April 29.

Remember that bright children have a tendency to rush through some of the material during exams. Please slow down, review your work and be among the last children in your class to hand in your paper at the end of each testing day. You have been well-prepared for these tests by your classroom teachers, and it would serve you well to use the strategies they have shared with you.

Like most of the school staff, I will be proctoring during the next two weeks. It is inevitable that I will need to cancel quite a few Gifted and Talented sessions. That being said, when possible, I will be meeting with my children from Howell Road and Wheeler Avenue this week.

SUNDAY - APRIL 7, 2013 - ON OR CLOSE TO 3:50 PM

It was a pleasure to see quite a few of my current families, some of my former students and their parents, and some friends that I have made over the years at Lights-On for Education last Thursday. My display this year included a retrospective of our Kidsday experiences including a photo essay and video and an Inter-School Risk tournament to showcase some of my Advanced Strategy Games Club undertakings.

There were two students selected to represent each school. It was a a tough battle and a great time.

One of the highlights of our display was the "Sloppy Swish." This paper roller coaster was designed and built by some of my Wheeler Avenue Sixth Graders.

Congratulations to Chris Basile and Melissa D'Elia from the Wheeler Avenue School for winning the tournament and to all of my students and club members who fought bravely inside the little gymnasium at Memorial Junior High School.

Please note that I will not be assigning homework during the two weeks of the New York State examination.

If you remember, I can still use your empty printer and copier cartridges. We recycle them and exchange them for new materials. Thanks!

Also note that I found a Crusier Glide 8 GB Flash Drive that does not have a name on it. There is also no data on it. If this belongs to your child, send me an E-mail and I will get it back to him or her as soon as possible.

LAST CALL - I still have a few free passes to visit our Kidsday friends at Scribble Press. If you would like to go, please let me know.

This week, I will be working with my students from the James A. Dever and the Willow Road School.

SUNDAY - MARCH 31, 2013 - ON OR CLOSE TO 4:30 PM

I feel that the last of school before the break ended in a flurry of activity. We published our first series of Kidsday articles, I met with many of my parents for Parent / Teacher Conferences and we hold our annual Interschool Greek Debates.

Congratulations to Athena for winning this year. Overall the children did a phenomenal job and I believe that everyone (Including some of our grandparents) had a wonderful time. If you did not get a copy of the program, please let me know and I will get you another. I also hope that you enjoyed the video presentation of our Kidsday experiences. I hope to give each sixth grade family a personal copy by the end of the school year.

This week I will be meeting with my children from Howell Road and Wheeler Avenue.

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 20, 2013

UPDATE - My Parent / Teacher Conferences at James A. Dever will be held from 6:30 - 9:00 in the evening on Thursday, March 21.

Please note that there has been a room change. I will now be in the Student Lunchroom instead of Room 200.

I am sorry for the inconvenience.

SUNDAY, March 17, 2013 - ON OR CLOSE TO 12:10 PM

EXTRA! EXTRA! Read all about it!

Starting yesterday and running all week is our series of articles that my Sixth Graders created for Kidsday! It's very exciting to see our work in print - along with some of our videos that have been posted on the Kidsday website. Congratulations to all of my Sixth Graders!

Speaking of 6th Grade, our Greek Debates will take place at Howell Road on Friday, March 22. The children from Willow Road, James A. Dever and Wheeler Avenue will travel by bus to meet us there. The children will need their materials (including note pads, pencils, props, costumes, posters and their lunches). Again I am asking that you do not send in peanut products or glass bottles. The Greek Debates are always interesting, intense and a lot of fun. I would like to get started at 10:45-ish. If the parents can arrive at Howell by 10:30, that would work best.

Parent / Teacher Conferences will take place this week. I will be at Willow Road for the afternoon conferences in Room 41 from 12:30 to 3:30 PM. I will be at James A. Dever on Thursday evening from 6:30 - 9:00 PM in Room 200. Please bring your child with you.

Finally, Happy Saint Patrick's Day to everyone who celebrates.

This week I will be working with my students from James A. Dever and Willow Road. Please note that the schedules will be changed significantly this week due to the Parent / Teacher Conferences and the Greek Debates. If I don't see you, have a wonderful spring vacation.

Mr. Rosenfeld

MONDAY, March 11, 2013 - ON OR CLOSE TO 12:30 AM

Greetings!

By now our Sixth Graders are working hard on their assignments for The Greek Debates on Friday, March 22. This is shaping up to be a tight battle and anything can happen to sway the outcome. A letter was sent home to Dever, Howell and Willow Road parents last week and the Wheeler children will bring their notes home on Tuesday. The notes include a tear-off sheet letting me know how many family members will be coming to witness this debacle...I mean spectacle.

Our Kidsday articles will start publishing either this Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Once they start, they will run for a full week. There will be another full week of articles in August.

Our Fourth and Fifth Grade Students will continue their ELA units this week.

I will be meeting with my students from Howell Road and Wheeler Avenue this week. Please note that I will be off-campus on Monday at a technology conference.

Have a great week!

SUNDAY, March 3, 2013 - ON OR CLOSE TO 2:15 PM

Please scroll down to my entry on February 20, 2013 for information about Parent Teacher Conferences.

The ELA unit continues this week for my Fourth and Fifth Grade students and my Sixth Graders will continue to work on their research for the Greek Debates.

This week I will be meeting with my students from the Willow Road and James A. These are a lot of work, a lot of fun and very entertaining. Unlike a class play where every actor rehearses his or her lines, this simulation is open-ended and each participant has a role in the final outcome. In other words, the script writes itself based on the actions of the characters. If you did not get my e-mail, please let me know.

This week my Fourth and Fifth Grade students will begin our English Language Arts unit using the Great Books series that I spoke about during our Open House last October. The Great Books are used in the accelerated classes in the High School District and the quality of the literature is outstanding.

Please consider sending in your empty printer and copier cartridges, as we exchange them for newer technology.

This week I will be meeting with my students from Howell Road and Wheeler Avenue.

Have a great week!

Mr. Rosenfeld

WEDNESDAY, February 20, 2013 - ON OR CLOSE TO 10:15 PM

Greetings to all of my Gifted and Students and their Parents!

I hope you are all well and that you had a nice break.

SAVE THE DATES:

FOR ALL STUDENTS:

My Afternoon Parent / Teacher Conferences on Wednesday, March 20 and Thursday, March 21 will be held at Willow Road in Room 41 from at 12:30 - 3:30 PM. Evening Conferences on March 21 will be held at the James A. Dever School in Room 200 from 6:30 PM - 9 PM. Please bring your child with you if it is possible. Due to the fact that I have a large number of students in all four district buildings, I will not be assigning appointment times. A separate note will follow soon.

Our second annual EXPLORATIONS event will be taking place after school on May 16 at Wheeler Avenue. This after-school event is a wonderful opportunity for my children and their parents to attend a series of workshops in a variety of subject areas. Last year's EXPLORATIONS event was very well-received and this year's is shaping up to be even better. Details will follow soon.

FOR SIXTH GADE STUDENTS:

Our first set of Kidsday articles will begin publishing in Newsday on March 15, 16 or 17. Another set of stories will run in August.

Our Greek Debates will be held on Friday, March 22 at Howell Road. Details about the project will be discussed starting this week. I would like to wish everyone good luck in their quest to rule Mount Olympus.

What's Up at Wheeler? Actually, that should read: "What is doing down at Wheeler?" The Fifth grade Gifted and Talented Students launched their parachutes from the auditorium balcony last week. Here were some of the highlights:

The class poses with one of their victims. (I mean samples.)

This young lady is ready to hit her target.

Wheeeeeeee!

We came up with a crude but effective way to retrieve each parachute after every trial.

It turned out that this canopy was only adequate but not the best for using drag. It did do well making both regular and decaffeinated coffee.

(Singing) "Born free...As free as the wind blows....As free as the grass grows...."

We tested these parachutes for canopy size, canopy material and suspension line length.

This young lady is just too happy!

Please remember that I am always collecting empty printer and copier cartridges.

Even though this is a short week, I will be meeting with my students from James A. Dever and Willow Road.

Regards,

Mr. Rosenfeld

SUNDAY, February 10, 2013 - ON OR CLOSE TO 11:15 PM

Greetings Everyone! I hope all of my children and their families made it through the blizzard without too many inconveniences. I am glad we did not have to deal with some of the totals that the Suffolk County received.

I would also like to wish those who celebrate the Chinese New Year a happy and healthy holiday.

This week will be continuing with our STEM units. I would like to showcase a few moments from last Friday's Fifth Grade Class at Dever:

These children are preparing to launch their parachutes. We intend to test for canopy length, canopy materials, and suspension line length. NOTE: At no time will we use actual children for these trials. The metal clips are perfect for these demonstrations.

We used the projection booth from the auditorium as a launching pad. It was a lot of fun up there!

Check out our high-tech P.R.S. (Parachute Retrieval System) - - - > Crude - but effective!

This week I will be meeting with my students from Howell Road and Wheeler Avenue.

Please remember to send in any used printer or copier cartridges. We recycle them in order to purchase new technology supplies. Have a great week!

SUNDAY, February 3, 2013 - ON OR CLOSE TO 10:15 PM

In my many years of teaching my Gifted and Talented classes, perhaps my proudest moment occurred on Saturday, February 2, on a Kidsday trip to Hostos Community College in the Bronx.

Four of my children were able to meet and interview Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor. Justice Sotomayor talked about overcoming hardships and the values of hard work and a quality education. She offered some advice that has become a recurring theme on many of my trips...and that is to be passionate about what is important to you. She also reiterated the value of strong family bonds and to always ask quality questions including "How?' and "Why?"

Justice Sotomayor also gave each of my reporters a copy of her new autobiography and we were invited along with our chaperones to attend her inspirational assembly program after our interview.

My students and I will NEVER forget meeting this brilliant and accomplished leader.

I am very proud of the job my children did in order to prepare for their interview with Justice Sonia Sotomayor. They represented our district with class and dignity...which is exactly what this assignment deserved.

This week I will be meeting with my children from James A. Dever and Willow Road. Please keep in mind that I might be assigned for jury duty this week.

SUNDAY, January 27, 2013 - ON OR CLOSE TO 9:20 PM

Good Evening!

All of the children in the Gifted and Talented Program are now working on their STEM units. STEM is the acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. The fourth graders are designing knee braces (Biomedical Engineering), the Fifth graders are going to be designing parachutes (Aerospace Engineering) and the Sixth Graders are learning the algebraic relationships in physics. They will also be creating bridge models (Structural Engineering).

Just a reminder that our last full-grade Kidsday meeting with our editor will be on Friday morning, February 1. The Sixth Grade children will be taken by bus from Wheeler, Willow and Dever so we call all meet together at Howell. Remember to wear your Kidsday T-shirts and to bring your lunch to school that day. (Please do not bring peanut products or glass bottles.)

I am looking to video tape with some of the parents who attended any of our Kidsday trips as chaperones. If you are willing to do this, please send me an e-mail. Thanks for your help with this!

I want to remind everyone to bring in their empty printer and copier cartridges. We recycle them in conjunction with our district's technology department.

Here are some photos of our recent Fourth Grade Native American Project. Enjoy!

Simulated artifacts from Howell Road. Have a great week.

MONDAY, January 21, 2013 - ON OR CLOSE TO 10:00 PM

Good Evening Everybody!

Here are some photos from our adventures in the big city last week. Special thanks to all of my parent chaperones for helping to make this trip successful.

We started our day at the ABC Television Offices where we interviewed G. Hannelius, from the Disney Channel Show "Dog With A Blog."

"G" was very gracious and warm and she appreciated all of our questions. At the end of the interview she signed a few things for my Kidsday crew.

Later in the day we visited Sony Technology Lab. In this photo, one of my students is editing her digital profile which is used to interact with the exhibits in the lab.

At this station, a young lady is assisting in a digital heart dissection with Dr. Valentine. GOOD NEWS! The patient pulled through!

We also toured the new Museum of Mathematics which recently opened on East 26th Street. Opening the door is as easy as Pi.

These tricycles have square wheels. Who wouldn't want to try this?

This young lady was once a comic book super-hero and was caged by an evil villain. She is not having a good time. She is only pretending.

The lower level has an electronic floor which contains interactive math puzzles and problems to solve. It was NOT part of the set of Saturday Night Fever.

This young man is using laser light to form shapes within a three dimensional shape. We were hit from behind by a very young driver who wasn't paying attention to his surroundings. Although we were scared, thankfully nobody was hurt at all and there was no real damage to either car.

What helped us the most was that our seatbelts were on and doing their job. I beg all of my parents and students to make that every passenger in your vehicle is using proper seatbelts or car seats for younger children. Sometimes when we run a quick errand "only a few blocks away" we forget. Please don't.

----------

If your child has not brought home his or her grading report, please note that it will go home this week - except for my Willow Road Fourth Graders. They will get their reports on Tuesday, January 22.

This Wednesday (January 16) I am going to be on a special Kidsday trip with one child from each school. I will post some pictures next week. We also have one more meeting with our editor and I will provide the dates for that as soon as it is arranged.

We are slowly winding down the Kidsday project and I felt it was exceptional this year. EVERY Sixth Grade Gifted and Talented Student went on at least one trip...and they all were very valuable experiences. I will provide details about our published pieces in March.

This week I will be meeting with my students from Howell Road and Wheeler Avenue.

Have a great week and remember to buckle up!

SATURDAY, January 5, 2013 - ON OR CLOSE TO 4:15 PM

By the end of this coming week, all of the children in all three grades would have had the chance to present their first projects. Grading report printouts will be going home soon. Most of the children did a very nice job! The growth from Fourth grade to Sixth Grade is astonishing.

Our Kidsday projects roll on. All of my Sixth Grade students will be meeting with our editor on Monday and we are putting the finishing touches on our articles. There may be a few more "off-campus" experiences in our future, so stay tuned. Also, I was given a few studio passes to Scribble Press. If any of my class parents or guardians want them, please send me an e-mail. The passes are for free studio time.

I was very proud of three of my Wheeler Avenue Sixth Graders. The boys worked together over the vacation and they built a working model of a paper roller-coaster as a product review for Kidsday.

Here is a video of their success (Please note that I needed to compress the file so it would fit on this website. It should play with any mobile device. It takes a minute to load):

Roller-Coaster-Movie.mp4

This week, I will be meeting with my students from Willow Road and James A. As you would imagine, there are very few female Captains in the tough and competitive party-boat businesses and Captain Amanda is a truly a local legend.

We had the opportunity to interview Captain Cash at J&H Bait and Tackle in Oakdale and we learned a lot more than just fishing. We learned about determination, dealing with naysayers and how to choose and train employees. It was a fantastic experience...

Captain Amanda Cash with two of my wonderful students.

Captain Cash is showing this young lady how to select a quality fishing rod.

In the back of J&H, Captain Cash demonstrated how to "clean" a fish. Great job kids!

Our second editor meeting for all of my Sixth Grade Students will be on Monday, December 7. The children will need to bring in their lunches to school. Also bring in any artifacts from previous Kidsday trips (Such as the T-shirts from Robofun, the books from Scribble Press and the Jewelery from Maker Bot.)

I will be meeting with my children from Wheeler Avenue and Howell Road for the week starting Wednesday, January 2. As I mentioned a few weeks ago, I will be at Wheeler Avenue in the Lunchroom for the afternoon Parent Teacher Conferences and at Howell Road for the evening conferences on Thursday. For additional information, please scroll down to my entry from November 17.

I would like to remind all of my fourth graders that they need to plan to get together with their partners as the project deadlines are fast approaching.

On Thursday, December 6, four of my students, three parent chaperons and I enjoyed two additional Kidsday experiences. First, we visited Scribble Press and the children wrote, illustrated and published their own books. Later in the afternoon we toured the retail facility of MakerBot and we got a firsthand look at how three dimensional printers work. This week three other children will be visiting Little Airplane and Clear Channel Communications. These are an incredible set of experiences and I am delighted to share them with my children. Here were some recent highlights:

The children are working on their books using all of the materials that Scribble Press has to offer.

The Publication process takes place in the back of the store.

Our books are literally "Hot-Off-The-Presses!"

We were fortunate to interview Ms. Dara Troshane. It was designed to stretch around a lady's wrist. It's a very exciting and innovative technology.

This week I will be visiting with my children from Howell Road and Wheeler Avenue. Have a great week everyone!

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 2, 2012 - Somewhere Around 10:45 PM

Our Kidsday Project is unstopable! During our first week, all of the Gifted and Talented Sixth Graders met together at Howell with our editor and discussed the project guidelines.

Four of our students took a trip into the city to Robofun to learn about robotics, programming interfaces and sensors. They even had the chance to sit down and interview Laura Allen, the President and CEO of Robofun.

On Saturday evening, four different children and some of their parents went into the city to see mentalist, magician and mathematician Sam Eaton and his show, "The Quantum Eye." After the incredible show, we had a chance to interview Sam and he even explained how to do a few illusions. There are several other fantastic opportunities in the next few weeks, so stay tuned...

Our editor, Pat Mullooly introduces the concept of newspaper writing to the children.

Before every Kidsday interview or experience, there is an after-school or evening planning meeting with the parents and children. These sessions are held to share the itinerary and discuss quality questions that we would like to ask as reporters.

You never forget your first time as a commuter. He was impressed with our pre-planning for this assignment.

Mentalist, magician and mathematician Sam Eaton shared his insights and advice with our students. It was a fantastic Saturday night for all of us.

This week I will be meeting with my Dever and Willow students. Have a great week.

UNDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 2012 - Somewhere Around 10:00 PM

I hope that everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend. I must say that I was a little disappointed...

Actually I was sitting in my room at 3:00 AM on Friday morning for some door-busting, gate-crashing, barrier-breaching social studies lessons...but nobody showed up. Just me an the crickets. (Sigh...)

On a more serious note, I am delighted to report that our Sixth Grade Kidsday Activities will start this week. We are meeting as a single class on Tuesday and our first "off-campus" trip has been scheduled for this Thursday. Another event will be taking place on Saturday evening. Please do not worry if I did not call you or arrange for you child to take part in one of our trips. More have been scheduled and more will be arranged by our editor.

This week I will be meeting with my Howell Road and Wheeler Avenue students, except for the Kidsday activities.

If you have not done so already, please take a look below at the information concerning Parent / Teacher Conferences.

Have a great week!

Mr. Rosenfeld

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 17,2012 - ALMOST 11:30 PM

GREETINGS FROM THE GIFTED AND TALENTED DEPARTMENT! (In other words....me!)

HERE ARE A FEW ITEMS OF INTEREST:

ITEM 1 - Parent / Teacher Conferences

I will be holding Parent / Teacher Conferences for all of my parents on Wednesday afternoon, December 12 and Thursday afternoon and evening, December 13.

The two afternoon conferences will be held at Wheeler Avenue in the Lower Level Art Room (Next to the Children's Lunchroom) from 12:30 - 3:30 PM

The evening conferences will be held at Howell Road in Room 8 from 6:00 - 8:30 PM

Please make note of the following:

I will see parents from all four district schools during these times. (To be fair I will be at Dever and Willow Road for the spring conferences.)

Due to the fact that I need to see so many parents from different schools, it is almost impossible for me to schedule specific appointments with parents during the official hours of Parent-Teacher conferences. When you come to my room, please sign-in when you get there and I will do my best to keep the line moving. If for any reason more time is required, we can schedule a longer conference when more time is available.

I have found that the conferences always become more meaningful if your child is able to attend with you.

ITEM 2 - REPORT CARDS

Please note that the Gifted and Talented Report Cards are graded from "1 to 3" - not 1" to 4." Grades of "2" on my report card does not mean that your child is performing below Gifted and Talented Standards at this time.

ITEM 3 - PATIENCE FOR CHILDREN AND FAMILY MEMBERS OF GRADES 4 AND 5

You may have read that my sixth graders are involved in a massive Kidsday Project that requires me to escort small groups of children all over the city and across Long Island to cover stories and interview various people. Some of these activities take place on weekends, nights and during the school day. There are also a few instances where I have to bus the children from all of my schools so that they can work together on projects with my editor.

Please be patient as we may have to move some of the deadlines around again. I appreciate your support and consideration.

ITEM 4 - FOR PARENTS OF SIXTH GRADE PARENTS

I will be calling quite a few of my Sixth Grade families over the next few weeks in order to set up "Off-Campus" Kidsday experiences, visitations and interviews. Some of these events were planned by me, but others will be arranged by our editor. Events can spring up at any moment and will take place on weekends, evenings and during the school day.

Please keep in mind that the children will need to meet with me after school hours at one of our district schools to organize our questions and to plan our day. These meetings will last about 40 minutes. Each trip will require a parent chaperon to accompany us into the city and to various destinations around Long Island.

Please note that if your child is unable to attend one of these trips, I am unable to guarantee that I can offer another one. Every child will be offered at least one opportunity to attend an excursion. I will try to match the interests of the children to the events that are scheduled, but that is not always possible. Thank you for your understanding.

The articles will publish in Newsday for a full week in March. While I alone will be responsible for the writing grades, the decision of which articles get published is determined by our editor.

This coming week I will be meeting with my students from James A. Dever and Willow Road.

I would like to take this time to wish all of my children and their families a wonderful, happy and meaningful Thanksgiving. In my opinion, it is truly one of the holidays that anybody can celebrate.

WEDNESDAY EVENING, NOVEMBER 14, 2012

BREAKING NEWS.....THE KIDSDAY PROJECT LAUNCHES ON NOVEMBER 27! Details soon...

EARLY MONDAY MORNING, NOVEMBER 12, 2012

Good evening everybody.

I hope that you are in the process of putting the storm damage behind you. I am starting to see shorter gas lines around town and more debris has been cleared. This does not the negate the tough road ahead for many people, only that we are starting to see some progress. Again, I hope your families are safe.

Here are the revised project due dates by school:

Dever: 4th Grade - December 18, 5th Grade - December 4, 6th Grade - December 3

Howell: 4th Grade - January 3, 6th Grade - November 29

Wheeler: 4th Grade - January 3 5th Grade - December 11 6th Grade - November 28

Willow: 4th Grade - December 20 6th Grade - November 21

Some of these dates may need to be revised again due to the 6th Grade Kidsday Project.

On a personal note, I would like to thank all of our veterans who have given so much for our country.

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 2012 (Roughly 9:45 PM)

Good Evening,

This is the first time that the district website has been back on-line after the storm - where I am able to sit at my computer and type a few thoughts to my children and their families.

While I have a few "typical" announcements that I would like to make concerning the Gifted and Talented program, I want to hold off on those and first offer my hope that everybody is safe and pray that your damages were minimal.

I also want you to know that the deadlines for the fourth, fifth and sixth grade projects will be generously extended. Keep working on them (if you can), but know that you will have more time to complete them.

I will have more information for you by Sunday.

I wish all of you peace in the aftermath of Sandy.

Mr. Rosenfeld

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 21, 2012

It was a pleasure to see everybody who attended the Gifted and Talented Open House last Thursday. I hope that you found the presentation informative. Remember that if you have any questions about your child's assignments or anything else, you can e-mail me at rrosenfeld@valleystream13.com.

Since last Thursday, I was asked about a few questions that I thought would apply to everybody, so I am posting the questions and responses here.

1) Can I make the text on the website larger?

Answer: That is an easy request. I hope the new font and size is easier on the eyes.

2) Will the sixth graders take part in the Greek Debates this year?

Answer: Yes! Details will follow and again I apologize for the confusion. We may have to move a few things around on the calendar, but the children and I are very excited about this fantastic experience.

3) Can I explain Kidsday a little more? Do the fourth and fifth graders take part? Who gets to meet the celebrities?

Answer: Kidsday is a fantastic opportunity for our children to experience journalistic writing. It is facilitated by the editor from Kidsday who is a former middle school teacher, though I alone handle the grading process. The best stories are published in Kidsday - which is the children's section of Newsday.

There are also some videos that accompany the stories which appear on Kidsday's website along with the photos and videos that I will take and share with the children. Since all of my sixth grade students work together on this, it is impossible to include the fourth and fifth grades.

In order to cover various stories, I will be taking children into the city and various sites on Long Island to cover stories that children would be interested in reading. This can include celebrity interviews, restaurant reviews, family trip ideas, etc. Some of these events take place during the day and others after-school or on weekends.

Selecting the children who will participate "on the road" is one of the most difficult decisions I have to make. I look for academic excellence, enthusiasm, maturity and appropriateness for each "off-campus" assignment. I also will start by taking one child from each school in order to offer equity to each building. I also want to include as many children as possible. Of-course the children will be well-briefed before they go on any interview or experience with me. The "main celebrity" is assigned to us from Kidsday, and I have no control over who is selected to meet with us.

Some Interview opportunities only present themselves a day before an actual event. I also require considerable extra work from the children who go with me in the form of thank you notes, question planning and feature articles.

In the past we have interviewed people from the radio and television industry, authors and scientists. My favorite experience was taking four young ladies to have dinner with Mae Jemison, who was the first African-American woman in space. The event was held at Cipriani's in New York. Another group shared a table with Mary Pope Osbourne and Natalie Pope Boyce who created the Magic Treehouse Series at the Huntington Applebees. They were both fantastic evenings.

Also note that scheduled interviews can also be canceled at the last minute and postponed until a later date.

Finally, I require a parent chaperon to accompany us to each event. The parent will not be able to take part in the actual interview, but will help me escort the children to and from the different events.
