HOMEWORK NEWS The school provides each student with a Vassar Road Homework Planner. Each morning upon arrival, the student will copy their homework in their planner. It is critical that the homework is correctly and completely copied. A parent/gaurdian needs to sign their child's planner each night to indicate that the homework is completed. Planners need to be signed nightly to keep the lines of communication open between home and school. The planner will be checked and stamped each morning to verify that the planner was is signed and the homework assignments were completed. Yellow highlighter will be used when checking planners to indicate if something incomplete, copied incorrectly, or not signed. Students will have two homework assignments from math & language arts in the beginning of the year each night for homework. Throughout the year, there will be at least one assignment from a textbook nightly. This will help them to follow written directions and utilize looseleaf paper in an organized manner. At times, it is possible that there may be an additional assignment. The "15 Minute Reading Log" in conjunction with the planner is also part of homework. Students must read fifteen minutes each night. The student must write the title of the book, author, and the pages read each night.. Please take a moment to ask your child to tell you about what they read to enhance "summarizing" skills before signing the log. T.I.C. NOTATION T.I.C. = Completed “Together in Class” When assignments are completed together in class, as a group lesson or discussion, the students will write C.I.C. on the top of the paper. C.I.C. NOTATION C.I.C. = "Corrected in Class” When assignments are reviewed and corrected together aloud, the students will write “C.I.C.” indicating that we went over it in class. Students will make their own corrections using their red pen as they follow along in class. ***Homework is review of the concepts taught for the day. If you find that your child is struggling, please jot me a note and I will happily sit with him/her one-on-one to reinforce the concept. We will be doing "Flash Fives" (drilling flashcards with a partner)throughout the year. As the year progresses we will ask that you purchase flash cards as part of our supplies, they are essential to our successful mastery of all facts. The students are to take a few minutes to study their addition/subtraction facts on a nightly basis. Content area tests will be announced and written in planners. A study guide will be provided and no less than 1 week of study time will be given to prepare. .............................................................................
