Students will have homework every night, Monday through Thursday. If there is
something special going on that day, no homework will be assigned on that
given day.
* Please make sure all homework assignments are signed nightly.
* Please review the directions on the homework pages with your child to ensure
your child understands what has to be done.
* All assignments MUST be completed in PENCIL.
* READ WITH YOUR CHILD EVERY NIGHT. I cannot express to you how important it
is to sit with your child and read with them. That extra 15 min or so can
make a world of difference.
* Please put sight words on flashcards and review them with your child as
part of their HW.
Here are tips for reading with your BEGINNING reader:
* Try to choose a book that your child can read successfully. Use the five
finger rule to help select a book. Turn to a page and have your child read
the page out loud. If they read all the words perfectly then they may be
ready for a more challenging text. If they have trouble with one word then
the book is easy to just right. If they have trouble with two words then
the book may be ok. If they have trouble with three or more words then the
book may be too difficult to enjoy. Remember to support your beginning
reader and help build their confidence by pointing out what they are doing
well! Also, reading to your child is so important! Good luck and happy
reading!
~Pre-read: Go on a picture walk and look at the pictures in the story.
Without looking at the words, discuss the setting and characters in the
story. Encourage your child to make predictions about what might happen in
the story. Point out one or two "tricky" words.
~During the reading: Have your child read aloud. When your child is stuck
on a word, encourage them to get their mouth ready and sound out the
beginning part of the word. Encourage them to think about the meaning of
the text. Encourage them to use the pictures for help. Encourage them to
find the little word inside the big word. Be positive and patient!
~After you read: Discuss the story. Discuss the characters, setting,
problem and solution. Discuss the main idea. Always encourage your child
to link the story to their life or another story.
Have fun and hopefully you'll have a wonderful time together.
If your child does not know how to spell their last name, please work with
them at home. Your child should also know their birthday, address, and
phone number.
