Holiday Turkey vertebrae…
Yes, that’s right, your turkey can help you with your science grade! Just
clean the vertebrae (bones) of your turkey’s neck and string them up on a
wire or some kind of string or cord and bring them to science class after the
break.
Have fun and be creative if you like!
YES… your turkey does have a neck… it’s just not attached anymore – the chef
of your household can let you in on the secrets of the “giblet” package.
There you can also see vital internal organs such as the heart, the liver and
the gizzard- an organ found in birds and earthworms that is used for grinding
food that humans don’t have (we have teeth to do that job.)
Be sure you boil the neck extra long and it will be easier to remove the
tissues that are attached (muscles, ligaments, tendons, cartilage.) Also
notice and remove the spinal cord that runs through the center of the
vertebrae. This is a bundle of nerve cells that sends messages back and
forth, to and from the brain.
Only clean, dry specimens will be accepted for extra credit!
Leave the bones out until they are dry – DO NOT store them in plastic bags –
use a paper bag so they can dry out.
