Nutrition Vocabulary Sheet

 

Calcium- Builds and renews bones and teeth.  Regulates the function of the heart, muscles and nerves.

 

Calories- A measure of the energy used by the body and of the energy that food supplies to the body.

 

Carbohydrates- The body’s main source of energy.

 

Cholesterol- A waxy substance found in every cell of humans and animals.

 

Fat- A nutrient that supplies energy, promotes healthy skin and growth and is a carrier of certain vitamins.

 

Iron- A mineral nutrient that helps build and renew the part of red blood cells that carries oxygen to cells.

 

Minerals- ex) calcium, iron and zinc.  Regulate body processes while others become part of body tissue.

 

Oils- Fats that is liquid at room temperature.

 

Protein- Helps your body grow, repair itself, and fight disease.

 

Saturated Fats- Fats that are solid at room temperature such as fat in meats, poultry skin and foods made with whole milk.

 

Sugars- Simple form of carbohydrates that usually taste sweet and are quickly absorbed.

 

Trans Fats- Formed when liquid oils are made into solid fats.  Ex) crackers, cookies, snack foods, fried foods and baked goods.

 

Unsaturated Fats- Liquid at room temperature. Ex) vegetable oils, nuts, fish and olives.

 

Vitamins- Nutrients that do not provide energy or build body tissue, but help regulate the body process.

 

Whole Grains- Ex) cereals, breads, pasta or foods that contain whole wheat flour, oatmeal, whole cornmeal and brown rice.

Please include what you ate for each meal of the day, which includes breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Students must include all foods eaten during that particular meal.
Do not lose this sheet because all of your information will be lost.
