Welcome

In our ongoing attempt to improve school climate, several initiatives have been undertaken this week at WJHS to address bullying and promote tolerance. Using Martin Luther King’s birthday as a conversation starter to promote a more positive school climate we are encouraging the following ideas:

1) A Bullying Incident Report Form – for students to report incidents of bullying that they witness or that is done to them. Most incidents of bullying are not reported and no interventions take place because adults, both at home and at school, are unaware of the extent of the repeated verbal or physical incidents.

2) Bus Captains – we are asking for student volunteers, from both the 7th and 8th grade to meet monthly with staff and administration to discuss ways to improve bus behavior and safety for all. This is on a volunteer basis only and no specific student issues/names will be discussed.

3) An Anti-bullying/Tolerance contest is underway. Students are asked for their creative ideas, in either poster or t-shirt form that will help get our message out to all students regarding tolerance and our goal that bullying is not acceptable. A committee of staff and administrators will judge the entries and prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place will be awarded. The winners of both the t-shirt and poster design will have their winning designs made into a reality to be worn or placed throughout the school. Due date for all entries is February 19, 2010.

All students in grades seven and eight were addressed by me, Mr. Anderson, and Mr. Seipp this week via social studies classes to review the details of our school climate improvement plans. Our goal is to make WJHS a better school by improving the interactions students have with each other on a daily basis. If you have any questions regarding these ideas, please feel free to contact me at 298-5200 ext. 103.

Thank you,

Mr. DiGrandi

Spring Sports Physicals are given every other week.
Next one is scheduled for Feb. 3rd.

The Wappingers Junior High PTA is collecting Box Tops for Education!
Please help us by cutting out the "Box Tops for Education" labels on groceries you use and dropping them off in the "Box Tops Bear" in the main office. The PTA will receive 10 cents for each box top submitted. The money raised will be used for activities and equipment for the students at Wappingers Junior High.
Thank you!

WJHS Parents/Guardians,

I received a wonderful thank you letter from Major Jose Ocasio-Santiago regarding our donation of "Treats for Troops" we organized in early November. He stated, "...at Thanksgiving I received what I thought was the nicest show of support I had personally received in my five deployments since 2002. The ability for you, your teachers, families and students to mobilize the largest drive of candy and goodies I could have ever imagined is simply amazing." His letter went on to describe the amazing progress our troops are helping with in Afghanistan.

Thank you to all that participated and we wish the Major and all of our soldiers a safe return home.

Mr. DiGrandi
