Special Education Roundtable |
||
|
The Special Education Department has been working to address many of the issues raised at the District Roundtable on Special Education. Listed below is a summary of some of the department's follow up activities:
Testing materials - the department has completed the ordering of additional testing materials (test kits and test protocols) for speech therapists, psychologists, occupational therapists and physical therapists.
Curriculum materials - Staff was surveyed to assess their curriculum needs. The results of the survey were shared with curriculum coordinators and we are in the process of placing orders. A follow up meeting was held on December 13, 2007 to ensure that special education curriculum needs are included in the 08-09 budget. The Assistant Coordinators have worked with special education teachers and textbooks and supplemental materials have been ordered for our 1.12.1 self contained classes.
Staff development - we are currently offering training in the 6 Traits of Writing. We are also sending special education teachers and administrators to Tri-State and Thinking Maps training.
Continuity issues - we are working to expand the continuum of special education including the establishment of inclusion classes at JJ and RCK and an autism program at the junior high school level.
Other issues that are being addressed include: The possibility of moving Project SEA to an alternative location Multi-sensory reading classes at the junior high school level The BOCES School to Work program for IEP students Class profiles of students in special class placements Adding additional support staff More in-service opportunities for psychologists, speech therapists, OTs and PTs. |
