Choices/Decision Making

In the movie "Dangerous Minds," Michelle Pfeiffer teaches her
students that they always have a choice; they can choose to
succeed or fail, choose to live or choose to die.

In the film "The Shawshank Redemption," Tim Robbins tells
Morgan Freeman at Shawshank Prison about his dream to give
charter cruises off the Pacific Coast once he gets released from
prison, having served two consecutive life sentences for murder.
Freeman's character cautions him to not dream so much, yet
Robbins' response is "You either get busy livin,' or you get busy
dyin.'" Even in prison, a person has a choice.

one's ability to change. What abilities, personality traits, etc.

personality traits, etc. detract from one's ability to make the right
decision and change one's life?
