Goals of the School Health Services Program

The primary role of the school nurse is to support student learning. At
Brookside, Mrs. Goodwin accomplishes this by implementing strategies that
promote student health and safety. Schools need to promote the health of
every child in order to raise educational achievement. The nurse serves as
the coordinator of the health services program and provides nursing care as
deemed appropriate. As the health coordinator, Mrs. Goodwin is responsible
for: identifying, assessing, and evaluating student health concerns;
assessing illness and injuries; facilitating pediatric nursing procedures
and health screenings; providing health education to students, staff and
parents regarding emerging health issues; supporting the food service
program and counseling when necessary; identifying health and safety
concerns in the school environment and promoting a nurturing school
environment; promoting healthy physical education, sports policies and
practices; promoting wellness programs for students, staff and parents;
assessing mental health needs, providing interventions and referring
students to appropriate school staff or community agencies.

In order to serve students effectively it is essential for parents to inform
the health office of all special health needs (i.e. food/insect/latex
allergies, asthma, diabetes, visual/hearing or speech deficits, need for
medication during the day, need for special aids such as crutches, walkers
or wheelchairs, either on a temporary or permanent basis, etc.) This
information is kept confidential and is very important to a successful
experience in school.
