School Nurse, Mrs. Elkind
Attendance, Mrs. Pernicano
Philosophy
The old belief that school nurses do nothing but put band aids on is a far cry
from the reality of the daily activities and responsibilities of today’s
school nurse. The special needs of our students require tasks that need to be
done by a nursing professional such as administration of medications,
monitoring students with a variety of health issues such as diabetes, food or
insect allergies, and seizures. These are all part of our every day activities.
The school nurse’s responsibilities also includes daily assessment of
students’ complaints and the decision making process of their disposition. The
legal and moral responsibilities make this task complex; there is so much more
involved when a student complains of even a simple headache. It is important
to also take into consideration a student’s emotional and psychological needs.
The health office remains a busy place from early in the day until after the
school buses leave. Our goal is to offer a safe, healthy environment in which
the student can learn and grow academically, physically, socially and
emotionally.
