Homework

   SEPTEMBER 2009

ELA is English Language Arts and includes: Reading, writing, spelling,
listening skills,grammar, and more.

Every child is expected to read for at least 15 minutes daily. This
"time" will increase gradually until your child is reading 30 minutes a day.

Your child will have a READING LOG - this is to record how many pages they
have read in 15 minutes (or longer)to be completed on a daily basis. If your
child reads longer or reads several times in one day... just record the total
time and date - ie...(9/01, 35 minutes). This is part of their grade. There
will be a Readers Response given on certain nights for homework to assess
their comprehension, and vocabulary knowledge. These two skills are very
important.

Every child will also receive a BOOK LOG which includes the title, author and
number of pages in the book as well as the level of challenge your child
thinks the book has provide for them.

It is recommended that every child purchase the school assignment pad as it is
user friendly for this age group, and is a great way to keep your child
organized. It will be your child's responsibility to copy their homework on a
daily basis.

If your child is absent and you would like the homework, please email me
early, and I will place the hw in the box at the front desk out side the
office or send it home with a designated student (if in another class, please
specify who the teacher is).

Homework is very useful tool to reinforce what is taught, or for your child to
be creative and discover useful information through the internet or newspaper.

Please email me at bruckstuhl@yorktown.org so I have your email address and I
know you have seen this email.... I am looking forward to a fantastic year.
                                       Sincerely,
                                       Barbara Ruckstuhl
