October NewsFlash!!!

Free or Reduced Lunch Application/Income Guidelines Correction:
An error has been discovered in the income guidelines sections of the Free and Reduced Lunch
application found in the District Transportation Guide (which was sent out this past summer). A
revision to the annual income can be found on the District website. If you have any questions,
please call the French Hill office and speak with Ms. Maddalena. The District does not want to
prevent anyone who qualifies for Free or Reduced lunch from filing. (Note: application must be
received by October 1.)

Rainbow Connection Committee:
French Hill's PTA has a committee entitled the Rainbow Connection Committee. The purpose
of this committee is to support French Hill families who may be in need. Ways this committee
can assist include helping a family who is experiencing a difficult situation, helping a family
not able to afford “extras” such as school pictures, the yearbook, etc.... Inquires should be
directed to either Mrs. Jennifer Weitman (PTA co-president), Mrs. Justine Amarosa (PTA
delegate), Mrs. Julia Brotko (teacher), Mrs. Carol Brockunier (teacher), Mrs. Jane Rainaldi
(school nurse) or me. All matters will be handled sensitively, thoughtfully and with an open
heart.

Red Ribbon Week:
The District is dedicating October 20th to 24th to Red Ribbon Week (“Rockin’ to a Healthy
Beat”) with the goal of helping our students learn how to grow up safe, healthy and drug free.
Learning objectives for kindergarten students include positive self-esteem (“I like me!”),
keeping healthy and strong (exercise, hygiene and eating good foods), an understanding that
medicine is a good drug that helps the body (includes rules for taking medicines), that there
are many people who help keep you safe and healthy, and that smoking hurts your whole body.
Grade 1 and 2 objectives also include the harmful effects of alcohol on your whole body.
The itinerary for this week can be found on the back of this letter. Your anticipated support
for this most special week is much appreciated!

Halloween Parades:
Halloween parades will take place on Friday, October 31st.
The morning parade will consist of A.M. kindergartners and will begin at 10:10 a.m.
The afternoon parade will begin at 2:10 p.m. and will involve P.M. kindergartners, Ms. Cahill’s
class, grades one and two.
In an effort not to disrupt programming prior to the parades/parties, please adhere to the
following:
Any snacks in to be shared must adhere to the District Wellness policy.
Have your child bring his/her costume to school. (Children should not wear costumes to
        school.)
        Costume weapons are not allowed.
Parents who bring goodies for parties are asked to do so no earlier than 30 minutes
prior to the parade. Also, be reminded that foods for parties must adhere to the
        District’s Wellness policy.

Of course, parents are invited to the parades. (For the A.M. parade, please wait in the front
lobby; for the P.M. parade, please line up along the parade route outside.) For security
reasons, only parents designated to help with class parties will be permitted to enter the
building following the parade.
