Students are expected to understand that all rules set forth by
the school, the science department, and the classroom teacher are done so in
the best interest of the student. Students who abide by these rules will
generally be met with an interesting and educational classroom experience.
-
Students are expected to be in the chemistry classroom, on
time, for every class and laboratory period. Lateness is not tolerated and
will result in time after school ninth period, either the day of the lateness
or the day after.
-
Any student who is absent must bring in their readmission slip
within 48 hours of the last day of the absence. Failure to submit a readmit
pass to the teacher will result in a “cut” and a zero for all work completed
on the day of the absence. Excessive absences are not recommended.
-
Students are always expected to come prepared for class and for
lab. Failure to be prepared may lessen the learning experience for the
student and possibly for his or her classmates.
-
Cheating and/or plagiarism will not be tolerated. Any student
who is caught cheating will automatically be given a failing grade for the
assignment as well as a second failing grade of equal weight. This rule
applies to the copying of lab reports and homework as well as cheating on a
test or lab practical.
Academic Requirements:
-
Your grade is determined as a running average of all work
completed in class. The following will be calculated in your quarterly
average:
-
Weekly quizzes 20-30 points each
-
Weekly labs 10-20 points each
-
Daily homework/class work 1-10 points each
-
2-3 unit tests per marking period of 50-100 points each
-
Cumulative Quarterly Exam at the end of each quarter 100
points
-
All students must be prepared for class. All students should
have the classroom supplies listed
here. Because the daily class takes place in a chemistry laboratory, students
are not permitted to ever eat in the classroom. Any student
who does not have a free period for breakfast or lunch, or who must eat at a
certain time of day, must make arrangements with guidance or with another
teacher for a better time to eat.
My advice to you:
-
Stay organized.
Because all of your assignments are given to you in advance, and because the
expectations of this class are clearly outlined and written on a board in the
classroom, there will never be a time when you should be confused as to what
is going on. Do your work and get it in on time and you will do fine.
-
Pay attention.
Chemistry lab is the worst place to decide to daydream. Mixing chemicals can
get very dangerous if done incorrectly. Safety is of the utmost concern and anyone
not following verbal or written directions during lab will be asked to leave
and automatically be given a failing grade for the activity. There is no
exception to this!
-
Work together.
This does not mean “hand in identical work.” But talk with each other,
discuss topics, help one another, and ask for help from your classmates.
Sometimes, hearing something said in another way helps us to understand
something that stumped us before.
-
Come in for extra help.
I am available for extra help Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, 9th
period. You can usually find me in the science office, room 404, or room
432. You can also come to meet me on a free period if you let me know ahead
of time. If you have any questions outside of school, you can call me in the
science office at 243-8082, or e-mail me at dlaux@yorktown.org.
I am looking forward to this being an exciting and prosperous
year for all of us!
