How can I help my child grow strong literacy skills?

READ to your child every night. Try not to make it a lesson, but
instead, read the story for enjoyment. Ask some questions about
the story after reading and tell your child how you felt about
the story, etc.
Language is a vital foundation for beginning reading and your
child should be able to talk about a story that he/she has read
and be able to respond to it.
ALSO, turn OFF THE TV(especially in the car!), COMPUTER AND VIDEO
GAMES.
Play board games, cook together, do some arts & crafts
activities. These are the REAL activities your child should be
involved in. They develop language skills, vocabulary, focusing
skills, motor skills and much, much more!

How can I help my child with HANDWRITING skills?

PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE! Do it in creative
ways....chalkboards, wipe-off boards, even shaving cream! Make it
fun and they'll want to do it!
Make sure your child is sitting correctly, has a correct pencil
grip and not distracted or tired. Be patient and remember that
your child is growing daily and so are his/her fine motor
abilities. This skill will strengthen as the weeks and months go
by....but PRACTICE!

How can I help my child strengthen fine motor skills?

There are many activities that will strengthen your child's
handwriting/cutting/coloring skills.
*Allow your child to play with Silly Putty or PlayDoh - rolling
small balls, pinching and squeezing it.
*Use clothespins to practice 'pinching' and strengthening fingers
and hands.
*Buy 'ColorForms' and stickers. Let your child peel them off and
on.
*Help your child to practice cutting by cutting up coupons and
pictures from magazine and supermarket flyers.
*Finger paint, pegs on a pegboard will strengthen fingers for a
 stronger pencil grip.

These are just some ways that can help to develop fine motor
skills. Call me if you have questions or concerns about this area
of development for your child.
