What are the benefits of reading to my child at home?

The benefits are endless! It is important that you read to your
child every day in order to help develop your child's vocabulary
and language skills. He/she will hear what a story should sound
like, they will notice the intonation and expression of the
characters' voices, and being read to will help develop his/her
own fluency when they begin to read. It is important to make
predictions before reading based on what the pictures show, as
well as make predictions during reading as to what may happen
later in the story. Along with making predictions, you should ask
your child questions while reading such as: Who are the
characters, what is the setting, what is the problem, and how did
they fix the problem, to help your child better comprehend
stories, and begin to monitor their own thinking about stories.
