November is Parent-teacher conferences. They are an excellent opportunity to find out how your child is adjusting to the new school year and to get to know his/her teachers.
Here are some general hints on how to have a successful conference:
1. Ask your child if there is anything that he would like you to discuss with the teacher.
2. Jot down everything that you want to talk about at the conference. For example, the child’s strengths and needs both academically and behaviorally.
3. Arrive promptly.
4. Avoid lengthy discussions of topics that are not related to the purpose of the conference.
5. Come with a positive attitude and be open-minded to suggestions from the teacher. Together devise a plan for your child to succeed.
6. Reinforce and support at home the plan you work out with the teacher.
7. Take notes about what has been discussed to share with your child.
8. Keep the communications going with the teacher.
9. Express an appreciation for the conference.
10. Do not stay longer than your allotted time.
