The purpose of homework
assignments is to promote organizational skills,to increase personal
responsibility, and to reinforce skills that have been learned in class.
Homework is a time for your child to shine and "show off" what they have been
doing in class. It's important to establish a set of routines and expectations
with your child right from the beginning of the year.
The following are some
tips to help you establish a homework routine for your child:
-
Create a quiet and
comfortable place for your child to complete their homework.
It is vital that the "homework place" be free of distractions and loud
noises.
-
Have homework materials
readily available
. Children in the first grade have a limited attention span. When they are
ready to work on homework assignments, make sure they have everything they
need. Even small interruptions can effect their concentration.
-
Establish a set time to
do homework each day.
By having a pre-determined time that homework is to be completed each day,
disagreements and any reluctance to get started may be avoided.
-
Be involved with your
child's homework.
Check your child's "Home-School" folder every day. While it is certainly not
recommended that you complete your child's homework for them, do make certain
that they understand the directions and check it over when they are done.
-
Encourage your child to
do their best.
