Spotlight on the Teacher: Mrs. Lisa Long, 3rd Grade
By: Kelli Miller and Anna Gormley

On January 14, 2008, Anna Gormley and I sat in a crowded third
grade classroom interviewing a teacher whom we both had for sixth grade at
Cardinal Pacelli. She smiled appreciatively, remembering some wonderful
times here in sixth and third grades. We had the honor of hearing all of her
stories and sharing them with you.
Mrs. Long attended the University of Cincinnati and received a
Bachelor of Science in Education. She went on to teach sixth grade at St.
Ursula Villa, and later worked in the Learning Disability Program at St.
Ursula Academy.

Mrs. Long didn't like her first grade teacher very much, and
that contributed to her becoming a teacher. She sent all four of her
children to Cardinal Pacelli School, and has gone from a CPS parent to a CPS
teacher. All of her kids loved Cardinal Pacelli, and so does she. She's been
so proud of all of her students, and that has convinced her day after day
that teaching is definitely the best career for her.
Mrs. Long has been teaching at Cardinal Pacelli for four years
now. She started as a substitute teacher for Mrs. Taul's seventh grade while
she was on maternity leave with her youngest son. She then took over for
Mrs. Klaus teaching sixth grade. Though sixth graders were very important to
her and she felt she could "connect" with them, she was transferred to the
third grade when Mrs. Brinker retired two years ago.
She teaches the third graders everything except for Phonics and
Math. Mrs. Long's favorite thing about the 3rd graders is their attitude
toward school. They still love coming to school and appreciate it fully.
Mrs. Long explained to us that, in her opinion, hands-on activities are the
best ways to teach children to love learning. Because of this opinion, Mrs.
Long has the third graders do one fun, hands.on project a month in order to
keep having a good time. Mrs. Long's favorite time of year with the students
is Christmas, because they do a lot of fun activities to get everyone in the
holiday spirit. She also enjoyed Thanksgiving when the 3rd graders did a
Native American Indian project where they actually "became" an American
Indian from around our country.
When asked what one thing none of the kids knew about her, she
laughed and said, "Well, when I was in college, I dressed as a mascot for
the University of Cincinnati Lady Bearcats. I wore a big costume and a
sports outfit with a cute little skirt at the bottom."
Mrs. Long's years of teaching have been full of proud memories.
She loves it when the kids do well in their grades and they truly understand
what the lesson is about. Her most memorable experience as a third grade
teacher was just last week, when a Pacelli graduate and local veterinarian,
Dr. Dan Meakin, brought in a 30 pound tortoise, a snake, and a bearded
dragon for the students to hold and look at. She loves seeing old students
grow up and graduate and then come back and tell her how great it's going.
As sixth graders, both Anna and I had Mrs. Long as our teacher.
We enjoyed her excitement and enthusiasm, and she never lost faith in us.
She always cooked amazing food for us if we succeeded in a certain class.
Our personal favorite was her famous lemon-poppy seed bread which we
devoured completely every time she made it. A personal memory of ours was
her hands-on way of learning fractions. We cut out a piece of paper that
folded into a small booklet which showed us how smaller bits of paper could
go into the same big "whole" on top. It was a great learning experience for
all of us.
Overall, Lisa Long's experience at Pacelli has been beyond
phenomenal and she's so proud to be a part of this fantastic school.
