| Top Ten Tips (to get kids to love reading)
1. Resolve that a love of reading will be your most important educational goal for your
children.
2. Show you value reading rather than tell your children you value it.
3. Don't worry about scheduling time for your children to read. If they love reading,
they'll find time. (Children find time to do the things they love. That's why you need to
make sure reading is one of the things they love.)
4. Don't worry about making your children read only “good” books.
5. Search out books your children will like.
6. Don't worry that books containing violence will produce violent kids. (Movies can
desensitize us to violence, while books sensitize us. In books for young people, evil is
always overcome at the end, usually with the help of courageous children. Prisons are
full of youthful offenders who can barely read.)
7. Make sure that your children can someday enjoy classics by not pushing them too
early.
8. Don't worry if your kids have periods in their lives when they don't avidly read.
(During this time, keep magazines around for them to pick up, and occasionally buy
them a special new book.)
9. If you have older children who already dislike reading, don't blame yourself.
10. Never give up on your children. No matter how old they are, that can be brought to
a love of books.
