Room 2 will be visiting the Holiday Shop
on Friday, December 13th at 12:40. Information is in your child’s
Congratulations to the Garlesky and
Farrar families who both welcomed new family members this week! Best wishes from your Room 2 family!
Writing: During Writer’s Workshop
this week, we read Salt Hands. We
discussed why this is another great example of a small moment text. The students continue to work on writing
small moments. We will soon be choosing
one of our favorite small moments that we’ve written, do some editing to it and
publish it. We will then have an author
celebration and will share our work!!
Students were introduced to their first Words Their Way spelling pattern
and sort this week. We learned a basic
closed sort and did them during Word Work.
We reviewed some of our CAFÉ strategies this week and how to
choose a “good fit” book.
week, your child will bring home his/her first “bag of books”. In this bag is a letter from me and 2 books
that your child chose. One of the books
is close to your child’s independent reading level and the other is meant to be
slightly challenging to get them to use strategies. They will have these books for 2 weeks and
then will get new ones.
We talked about the difference between
rows and columns this week, as well as how to think of a title for different
data representations. We reviewed a lot
of the data collecting and representing skills and began our assessment today
(Friday). We will finish up the
assessment next week and then will begin our measurement unit.
PLEASE REMEMBER THAT MINUTES RECORDED EACH NIGHT ON THE HALF-SHEET ARE FOR MATH FLUENCY PRACTICE (NOT READING MINUTES).
will be focusing on “global celebrations” for the next few weeks. We will take a look at our own heritage and
celebrations while looking at the celebrations in other countries. We will be focusing on Mexico, Italy, England
and Australia. Next week, I am asking
that each child bring in a photo of his/her family celebrating something. It can be a birthday, a holiday, etc. Your child should be prepared to talk about
his or her photo to the class. These will be DUE ON WEDNESDAY!!
Also, next week, your child will be bringing home some questions to
answer about his/her heritage.
Room 2 Parent Contact List
Thank you to Mrs. Villa who is willing to put
together a parent contact list for our class.
This will be a list of parent contact information that will be shared
with other parents to be used for things like play dates, birthday party
invites, etc. THIS IS COMPLETELY
VOLUNTARY. If you want to be included,
please fill out the half sheet and send it back to school ASAP and I will get
them to Mrs. Villa who will compile the list.
You can also email her the information at firstname.lastname@example.org .
Room 2 Family Heritage Cookbook
To culminate the study of
our heritage and global celebrations, I will be creating a class cookbook that
contains recipes that reflect our different heritages. I am asking that each family submit one
recipe that is a tradition for them and is native to their family
heritage. I need the recipes sent in or
emailed to me by December
13th so that I can compile them and have them ready before
winter break. Please include the recipe
title, ingredients needed and steps to make it.
Look for an information letter to come home on Tuesday.
November 17th, the first graders at Fishcreek will be having Grinch
Day. This is a day filled with math and
literacy activities that are Grinch themed.
We also will be wearing green and enjoying some green snacks and treats.
Mark your calendars for Grinch Day!

Polar Express Day
From Mrs. Obraza and Mrs. Bengston:
On Friday, December 2oth, our school will be
celebrating ‘Polar Express
Day’, in honor of the children’s picture book, The Polar Express, by Chris
VanAllsburg. To help make this a special day for the students, please
allow them on
Friday to: wear
appropriate pajamas to school, bring slippers (but wear weather-appropriate
shoes) and bring a stuffed animal OR pillow.
Many classes will have a reading of the book in the morning and
all students will be viewing the movie adaptation of the book in the afternoon.
Students will also be enjoying a movie intermission that includes hot (warm)
cocoa with marshmallows and a cookie.
We will also be offering an alternate movie choice for students
whose parents prefer they view a non-holiday movie. Please contact your child’s
teacher via email or handwritten note prior to the morning of December 20th if you prefer your child/ren not see
The Polar Express.
