Last week in math we began looking at strategies that will help us memorize the
addition facts and practicing the facts. The goal is to be able to say the sums
automatically, what we are calling fact power. We have been practicing the doubles
facts as well as those combinations that make 10 that we started with at the beginning
of the year. This week we will look at the pattern in plus nine facts and at facts that are
close to doubles (6+5, 8+7...). Tomorrow the class will learn a new game, and I will
send the directions with their homework to give them a fun way to practice addition
facts at home.
October is Fire Prevention Month. The Grandview firefighters visited us on Friday
afternoon to talk about fire safety. We have fire drills at school at least once a month,
and every class has a meeting spot to go to. Sometime this month please talk to your
child about what to do in case of a fire at home. Make sure they know a primary and
secondary escape route from their rooms, and that they know the family meeting spot
where you can all wait for the fire fighters, knowing you are all out of your house.
In preparation for our next trip to Darby Creek we will be looking at leaves. Please
help your child bring 2 leaves (from 2 different kinds of trees) to school on Wednesday
of this week. We will use them to practice some “leaf vocabulary”. We will make
rubbings of the leaves, sort, classify and label them. The class will also be working in
pairs to research trees and what they give to other living things. Each group will put
the information they find into a slide show for the class to view.
We have finished with our mealworms and some students have asked to take theirs
home. This is OK with me, but they need your approval also. If your child brings a note
from you and a container for the mealworm or beetle, she/he can take it home. The
mealworms or beetles should not be released. They will need to remain in their
containers until the natural end of their life cycle. Any mealworms left in the classroom
on Friday will go to my house to breed and supply next year’s second graders with
mealworms.
