FAQWhat should I know this year?
Should my child be reading everyday? Definitely twenty minutes at a minumum. If your child reads aloud to you, that's even better. Reading together can be fun. Your child can read to you in the car and entertain both of you. Makes for great conversations and love of reading. Does my child have spelling tests? YES. Your child will have a list of spelling words that they choose each week from a master list. They will have a test on Friday. Although spelling is not a subject on the report card, we feel that learning sets of spelling words connected to spelling rules will benefit your child. Try taping them to the refrigerator where they can be viewed daily. Does my child have math homework every night? YES, This year students will have two assignments. The first is to learn all of their math facts. You will be initialling a math and reading log for me so that your child knows it is his or her responsibility to learn the math facts. These can be practiced in a variety of ways (games, websites, verbally) and will increase your child's success in every aspect of mathematics. Math websites have been provided in my 'Links' page. Will I be signing my child's assignment book? This year, my expectation is that your child knows their assignments and does them. I will not be checking for your initials. However, I do ask parents to check assignement books when your child tells you that they have no homework. They should have all assignments written and checked off if done. Please understand that homework has a value to your child's education. How many AR points should my child have so far? Your child should have three points a month. We start September with just one book of any number of points. The rest of the year should be three points each month unless otherwise noted. Are homework assignments provided in the lesson plans? I do my best. Sometimes we are right on schedule, sometimes a day or so behind. Tests will always be posted on the Calendar page. What should I be looking for in the way of school communication? You should be checking your child's homework folder (green folder) every night. This is also the folder that will have his or her calendar and hold all graded papers, school and PTA communications, and other important materials each FRIDAY. Look for this and make sure you empty those papers that do not need to be returned. You must also sign or initial their calendar, looking for problems with behavior or missing assignments. |
