Fifth Grade News December 4, 2009, 2009 https://teacherweb.com/OH/LittleHockingElementarySchool/MrsArnold/index.html Class News Progress Reports went home today. Remember these are interim reports and your child may have missing assignments due to illness or other absences. Please look over them and discuss them with your child. The cover sheet needs to be signed and returned by Monday December 7th. Reading–Mrs. Arnold Last week we looked at techniques advertisers use to sell products. Students were given an extra credit assignment that involves finding commercials (TV or radio) or print advertisements that include these advertising gimmicks. They may hand this in any time before Christmas break. There are 6 and they may earn up to 6 points extra credit. Students were also given a list of extra vocabulary words. They will be tested on these on December 7th. **Students need to have a book read by December 15th for an in-class book report. This should be a fifth grade level (or above) book and should be fiction. Social Studies – Mrs. Arnold Students are studying about “Economics” in social studies. We will be learning about supply and demand and the four factors in production. Students will be given a list of economics vocabulary words to learn and will have a test over this chapter on Wednesday, December 16th. On December 11th students will be participating in a Trade Fair. They will be allowed to bring in items to trade with other students. ALL trades are final. Examples of items to trade are homemade baked treats, toy cars, trading cards, jewelry, CD’s, and games. After the Trade Fair we will talk about supply and demand and which items were popular and attempt to determine why. ******There will be a quiz over the states in the southeast on December 9th. Science – Mrs. Hamrick Test over the “processes that shape the Earth’s surface” will be Tuesday. Study the notes in the science notebook and Chapter 1 beginning on page C2. Math – Mrs. Hamrick Students must be able to find common denominators to compare fractions and add and subtract them. There are 3 rules I teach the students to follow that will always work: Rule 1 – choose the largest denominator; Rule 2 – double the largest denominator; and Rule 3 – multiply the denominators. Remind your child of these rules when they need to compare and order fractions. The students will learn to reduce fractions or write them in their simplest form and rename fractions as mixed numbers.
