ACCELERATED READER BOOKS
Students are expected to read and pass the tests for two books each
month. The books must be an appropriate reading level for each student and
are approved by the teacher. For 6th graders, the general requirement is
that the books must contain chapters and be level 4.0 or higher. For 5th
graders, the required reading level is set by the teacher individually.
Students are encouraged to read their books with their parents or to at least
share and discuss what they have read with their parents. This tends to be a
key factor in helping students pass the test and is a way to build
comprehension skills. This way, your child also receives positive
reinforcemnet from you for their reading efforts. Students are encouraged
to read more than the required amount of books for extra credit. In May, we
will have a pizza party for all students meeting their AR goal of two books
per month. Students earn a Free Pizza certificate from Pizza Hut each month
as a part of the BOOK IT! program.

5th GRADE PRESIDENT REPORTS - Mrs. Steffens' classes
Due - To be assigned in February
Students will be assigned a president. They will be given a sheet
listing the directions. Each piece of information is to be numbered on their
final draft. They are to also get a picture of their president. The
teachers will help them find a picture if they have trouble finding one.
Final reports will be displayed in the hallway.
6TH GRADE COUNTRY REPORTS - PART I - No Country Reports for 2003-2004 school
year
Miss Sinn's class - Part I Due date: None
Students are just now choosing their countries. Students will research
their countries and will be doing their reports as a Powerpoint presentation
on the computer. They must complete some of the work at home, but they will
work on creating the power point as a part of Language Arts in Mrs. Linzey's
class. They will turn in a print out of the slide show.
The report is done in three parts, assigned throughout the year. I will
post the due dates and directions for each part as they are assigned.
The Festival will be in May. Students may dress in their
country's native costume and are to bring a food dish representative of their
country. Parents are invited to attend this fun activity. I will post the
date as soon as it is set.
Part I - There are three parts to this assignment:
1. Flag - Must be made of fabric that is the size of a regular pillowcase.
It may be sewn, painted, or glued. It may be one or two sided. They will
hang in the hallway so they do not need a pole.
2. Map - It is to be drawn on a large sheet of white construction paper. It
must be neat, colorful, and have at least five major cities (besides the
capital). It needs to show rivers, oceans, large landforms (mountains,
canyons, lakes, etc.) and have them labeled. Correct spelling and placement
are essential. The name of the country should be in large letters as well as
the student's name in small letters. A key may be necessary to identify some
parts. Neatness counts! Do not submit a computer generated map.
3. Written Report: "Geography of ____________""
The report may be handwritten or typed. Students are NOT TO COPY from books
or computer printouts. They need to write their own sentences to cover the
topics listed below. Each topic should be one paragraph with a title of the
topic. Each paragraph must be a t least 5 sentences: Topic sentence, Detail
sentences, and Concluding sentence.
LOCATION IN THE WORLD - give longitude, latitude, continent, hemispheres and
countries that are nearby
BODIES OF WATER - What bodies of water surround it, run through it or are
within its borders. Name them and what affect they have on the country (Are
they good for transportation, trade, blockades to expansion?)
PHYSICAL FEATURES - Name the physical features (mountains, grasslands,
deserts, volcanoes, basins, forests, etc) and how they affect the country.
Do not include extra facts. They will be gathering more info in part II and
part III. Report must have a colorful cover that depicts something about the
country - including the countries name. All should be in a folder or binder
of some type.
LANGUAGE ARTS - ILLUSTRATED RIDING JOURNAL
Due - Books will be completed about two weeks after the last class
(9/20).
Students will write weekly journals about their experiences
riding by using the computer and will illustrate their writing with
photographs. In addition, they will complete two booklets about horses that
we have read together and that they will complete on tneir own. They each
will write a report and give an oral presentation on a particular breed of
horse. Look for the due dates on the School Planner.
Students will complete a test over what they learn in the riding and
classroom experiences and will receive Certificates. All of these will be
compiled to make individual keepsake books.
