BAND NEWSLETTER – SEPTEMBER 2008

High School Band Camp
This year’s high school band camp was another great success. The highlight for me, personally
is always watching the parents march around the field with their child’s instruments. It’s
always fun for me to see the looks on the guest marchers faces as they gain a new appreciation
for the demands on marching bands today. Thanks to all the parents and friends who helped in
any way with the success of the camp. A special thank you to the parents who helped me with
the band during the week!

Junior High Band Camp
These three days of camp was also very successful for the Junior High Band. If your child missed
this week, they will be able to catch up by our first performance on September 19th.
Congratulations to Ethan Hutchinson who was selected as this years’ field commander for the
junior high band.

Volley for a Cure
The HS Marching Band will be performing in the HS gymnasium as part of the Volleyball’s “Volley
for a Cure.” The date is Thursday September 18th right after practice. We will be complete our
performance by 4:20pm but the students are welcome to stay for the rest of the event and cheer
on the Redskin Volleyball team.

Spaghetti Supper
The Music Boosters are sponsoring a spaghetti supper on Friday night, September 19th before the
home football game. The boosters will soon send home a separate form requesting help with food
donations or to work at the event. All profits from this event will support the High School
Disney Trip in December. Please return the forms immediately to the band room in order to
adequately plan for purchases and amounts. The Junior High Band and the High School bands will
perform at 5:30 p.m. at the Fire House and then following the performance; both bands will
return to the high school and prepare for the football game. Our neighboring band Northridge
will also be performing with us at the fire station. Then be sure to attend the football game
and watch the Jr. High Band performing at halftime with the H.S. Band. The Junior High Band
members will be free to leave or watch the game from the home stand following the half-time
performance. The band room will be open following half time for the students to return their
instruments. All parents are invited to this important performance.

times for departure. This is Pickerington Central HS, not Pickerington North like last year.
We do know the contest starts at 5:00pm.

High School. An exact performance time will be announced soon. We certainly hope many of you
will attend this very prestigious event in a couple weeks.

performance. Candy bars are passed out in the morning before school by Belinda Carr and Sharon
Naylor. We will continue to sell the candy until all the boxes are gone.

know how many seats will be filled by band members. It is our hope that all band members
experience this trip in December. If anyone has financial difficulties regarding the cost of
the trip, please contact Mr. McLeish privately. The music boosters and other outside supporters
want to make sure everyone in the band has the opportunity to participate.

Attention Junior High and High School Band Parents:

Help is needed from 9:00 a.m. to Noon this Saturday, April 5th, to clean the concession stands
to prepare them for track season. The first track event is coming soon, and the stands need a
good cleaning and going over before they will be ready for use. If you could come up to the
school to help at any point Saturday morning, we would greatly appreciate it. Cleaning supplies
and tools will be available.

Profits from the concession stands generate a large portion of the funds needed to maintain the
music programs at Utica. Please get involved and offer your time and skills to this important
project. Volunteers to work in the stands are always needed. The home track events are noted
below. Please contact Priscilla Hare (priscilla@jcc.com or 587-0051), or Sandy Spence
(spences@denison.edu or 366-0045) if you are available to work at any of these events.
Volunteering your time to work at the concession stands for track events and football games also
allows you to earn money toward your child's band account, which can be applied to band camp
fees, marching band shoes, uniform cleaning, trips (including Disney), and more.

FLORIDA TRIP TO DISNEY WORLD

I would like to clarify something about the Florida trip. If you purchase the packet from the
tour company, you must do everything the same time as the full group. This means, meals, hotel
check in, park admission, etc. The hotel check-in will not be until about 9:30 pm on Saturday
night. You must also be with the group for all meals away from the hotel. Transportation to
all of the band events will only be available to those who pay for the bus seat. If you plan
to fly to Florida or drive separately and if you purchase the package you will need to arrive at
the event the same time as the band in order to use the package.

Some parents have requested signing out band members in order to stay longer in Florida.
You are free to sign your child out anytime during the last day. However, please note, the
total transportation cost of the trip will not change, as this has already been set by the tour
company.

Band Trip to Florida

The band will depart from Utica on December 26, 2008 and return on December 31st. The band will
march in "Mickey's Once Upon A Christmastime" Parade on Sunday December the 28th. The band
will also visit the following parks: Epcot, Animal Kingdom, and Disney's Hollywood Studio.
More information will be available soon. Details and estimated costs will be brought up at
Tuesday’s booster meeting. The transportation cost alone to get the band to Florida is
$14,000.00. The music boosters are going to work extremely hard to cover this cost. We need
many parents to get involved and help out with money making projects to see this become a
reality for next year’s band. The first opportunity to help raise money is the Jazz Festival in
two weeks. Please volunteer to help, or financially support this event. We are already
accepting donations to help cover the cost of this transportation. If you, your business, or a
friend would like to donate, send it to the high school care of Thomas McLeish. Checks should
be payable to the North Fork Music Boosters.

another great Jazz Festival here at Utica. All profits from this years festival will help pay
for the bus transportation to Florida

 January Newsletter - 2008

Disney....A Dream will come true again!
Four years ago the marching band took a trip to Disney World in Orlando, Florida. Last
spring we made a video tape and submitted it to Disney requesting a possible performance. Well,
I officially received the news today (1-11-08) that we were invited back and are scheduled to
perform in "Mickey's Once Upon A Christmastime" Parade on Sunday December 28th in the Magic
Kingdom. We are now in the process of putting together a trip itinerary. We are scheduled to
depart on December 26th and return home on December 31st, 2008. The trip will include the
performance day at the Magic Kingdom, then visits to Epcot, Animal Kingdom, and Disney's
Hollywood Studio. More details will become available soon.

High School Solo and Ensemble Event

Many high school musicians will be performing at Granville High School on
Saturday February 2nd. This is again the site for this year's OMEA Solo and Ensemble
Adjudicated Event. All events will be scheduled between 8:00 a.m. and
4:00 p.m. A bus will be at the school for all band members to depart at
7:00 a.m. We will load the buses at 6:45 a.m. and arrive at Granville by 7:30am.
The bus will return in late afternoon to UHS with an exact return arrival time to be announced
at a later date.
All musicians will be assigned a performance time. Parents and friends may attend this
free performance, however there are some important rules that MUST be followed: No Camera’s,
video taping, tape recording of any events, doing so will disqualify that performer and possibly
the entire school. To be safe, DO NOT BRING THESE DEVISES! Cell phones MUST be turned off in
the performance areas. We are also required to have an adult chaperone present for the entire
day in our homeroom. Please sign up for a one half hour time slot if you are able to help out.

Yard Sign
The music boosters have recently received a new shipment of white yard signs with
lettering on both sides. They come with the medal stand and hopefully everyone will purchase
one and show your support of the band. The signs reads, "Proud Supporter of the Redskin band"
and they sell for $15.00. Contact Mr. McLeish if you would like to have one for your yard.

Jazz Festival—February 23rd

Plans are in progress for the fourth annual Utica Jazz Festival. This festival has featured
many different schools over the past three years. This year we have the following bands
committed to the festival: Heath HS, Mt. Vernon HS, Utica JH Jazz band and the Utica HS jazz
band. We hope to add additional performance groups before the end of January. The festival will
begin at 5:00 p.m. in the high school cafeteria. Food will be available for purchase throughout
the evening. The cost of the event is $4.00 for adults and $2.00 for students and senior
citizens.

Pep Band
This year’s pep band season is in full swing. The band will have six performances this month
at the boys and girls basketball games. Check the music booster calendar or the band -site for
exact performance dates.

Jazz Band
This year’s jazz band is still securing performance opportunities for this school year. If you
have a performance request, contact Mr. McLeish.

High School Concert Band
The High School Concert Band will be performing twice in March. The band will perform their
competition music on Friday March 7th at 7:00 pm in the HS gym. Saturday March 8th they will
travel to Newark High School and be adjudicated at the district level. Those bands receiving a
superior rating will advance to the state competition for concert bands. Please plan to be there
and support the concert band during this very important performance.

Junior High Concert Band
The band will be rehearsing for their annual concert to be held on Tuesday March 18th at
7:00pm. This “Pops Concert” will feature eight selections and has always been a delightful
evening. The Junior High Jazz band will make their final appearance at this concert. Please put
this important date on your calendars.

Marching Band DVD’s
There are a still few of the Marching Band DVD's available. This fall was a wonderful season
with many special memories. The cost of this DVD is $5.00. Thanks to Chuck Brand for putting
this together for the Music Boosters. Contact Mr. McLeish for your copy.

Music Boosters
The music boosters will hold their monthly meeting on Tuesday the 12th of February. The meeting
will be held at 7:00 p.m. in the band room. We will hopefully have more details available at
this meeting. I would like to encourage more parents/friends to attend these meetings. Our
plans are for the bus cost to be paid for by the music booster organization and not by the band
members. (Estimated at $14,000.00) In the fall our booster attendance was around 25 members,
the last two months we have seen a major decrease in attendance because of few activities during
the winter months. However with the Florida trip now in December, we need lots of booster
support to make this dream become a reality. Please mark this date on your calendar in
February!

BAND NEWSLETTER – October 2007

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR
August and September were very busy & hot months for the band department.
A few of the events included:
•	six football game half-time performances
•	a spaghetti supper featuring the JH and HS Bands
•	JH/HS band combined half-time performance
•	H.S. Band performed at the Utica Marching Band Festival
•	H. S. Band performed at the Pickerington North Band Competition
•	HS Band performed in the Utica Homecoming Parade
•	JH Band performed in the Homecoming Pet Parade.
We want to especially thank our parents and Music Boosters for their continued support. In
addition to attending all of the above events and supporting their kids – they worked in the
concessions stands, chaperoned bus trips, braided hair, set up the pit, cared for and passed out
uniforms, cooked spaghetti and helped with numerous other items.
This year would not be possible without all of the hours and hours of help you have given to
make our season a success. While the year is winding down, we still have some of our biggest
performances coming up and we will continue to need assistance and support. One thing we know
for sure is that there is a great difference in our marching bands performance when an audience
is there cheering them on. You, the audience, have the power to change a mediocre performance
into a superior performance. Please get involved and jump on our bandwagon. Our kids need and
appreciate your support!

DRY-CLEANING
Many high school band members have not paid their required dry-cleaning fee. Please send
in a check for $15.00 to cover the cost of three cleanings. The next cleaning will be after
the marching season is complete. The final cleaning will be at the end of the school year.
Make checks payable to the North Fork Music Boosters.

SPAGHETTI SUPPER
The Music Boosters sponsored a very successful spaghetti supper in September. Thanks to
Tina Pargeon for being the chairwomen for this project. We also appreciate the many volunteers
who helped make this evening a success. Thanks to everyone who attended and supported the
marching bands.

If you would like to order a Utica Band Jacket please contact Dush Design’s directly. The
jacket is red and has the band logo on the left side with the students name

available in 5-7 working days after the order is placed. (depending upon the size)

MUSIC BOOSTERS
The Music Boosters will hold their monthly meeting on Tuesday the 9th of October at 7:00PM
in the HS band room. All parents are encouraged to attend and help
