 Grade 2 Curriculum 

2009-10


· Religion- Continue to develop the knowledge of the Christian Community and 
the Catholic Church, prepare the children for the sacraments of 
Reconciliation and Eucharist. Learn about Jesus through Bible stories. 
Develop the ideas of right and wrong, responsibility for oneself and our 
family and neighbors,respect for all people. 


· Mathematics- Strong emphasis on number facts through 18.  Teach regrouping 
and renaming of two and three digit numbers.  Measurement in standard and 
metric. Shapes. Fractions. Problem solving, higher level thinking skills, 
word problems, grouping of objects in various ways. Use manipulatives to 
work 
math problems. 


· Reading/Language Arts- continue to develop:  phonics skills, spelling 
skills, 
main idea and details in stories, reality and fantasy, reading articles to 
obtain information, telling sentences and questions, writing skills, 
manuscript and cursive handwriting (cursive after Christmas), parts of 
speech 
(nouns, verbs, and adjectives), contractions, antonyms, homonyms, synonyms, 
oral reading, talking in front of a group, sharing the thoughts and ideas 
that the children put on paper, journaling, listening skills, independent 
reading. 


· Science/Health- animal families, personal safety, D.A.R.E. program, 
magnets, plants, Zoo visitors. 


· Social Studies-   Communities, maps and globes, awareness of the world 
around them. Changes in the communities, transportation, communication, 
Second Step Program, Bullying Program. 


· Computer- Accelerated Reader skills and basic computer skills will be 
developed. Use of the internet by the children. 


· In addition to encouraging strong Christian Values in our children, our 
strongest emphasis is in the language arts and math areas.  We are supplying 
the building blocks for the children’s future education.  Without strong 
skills in these two areas, the children cannot succeed in the future grades.
